Puretone – "Addicted To Bass" (1998)

2010/05/31

After a long day yesterday (day before Memorial Day) I was finding my way to bed when I almost took a bad step over the stairwell which has had no railing for a couple of weeks since G and I had a new floor laid in the upstairs hall. When I awoke today (Memorial Day) I had the thought, "It is awesome that others have fought wars and even died so we could live in a country so great. A country, where there are building codes so idiots like me don't accidentally kill themselves. Perhaps I will spend today honoring those who fought, and even many of my own ancestors by NOT DYING TODAY." … and thus, the stairway now has a railing. It was a surprising amount of work taking up most of the day. Here are the before and after pics (oh and yes, the hall is pink… get OVER IT! is iS AWESOME!)

Before:
Before - Stairway without railing! Be afraid!

After:
After - Stairway with Railing - You say 'Wow that is a sweet railing!' ... Yes, I know.

I had been planning building it eventually. G liked the open stairwell because it made the hall feel bigger. I did too. But alas. Something else will have to kill me now.

What does today's song have to do with this?

Well right in the middle I realized I needed 4 bolts because the ones I had were the wrong size. Because it was a holiday the hardware store right around the corner was closed so I had to drive a long way for 4 stinking bolts. It was okay though because I borrowed G's car and this song by Puretonw (aka Josh G. Abrahams) came on her MP3 mix. I was all zoom zoom to the store and back!

Darude – "Sandstorm" (1999)

2010/05/30

I've been sitting at the computer for hours. Though not unusually sometimes the tension can build. Now I feel the need to just jump up and run around the house 5,000,000 times to some trancy-y dancy music! I probably won't, I'll just vacuumm or something lame and useful instead, but in my mind, I'm just running!

Aimee Mann – "Red Vines" (2001)

2010/05/29

My apathy is strong today. With the heat and G out and about, I have slept poorly. So I'll be on the sidelines watching the show, but probably with beer and Twizzlers instead of cigarettes and Red Vines.

I don't suppose you'd give it a shot
Knowing all that you've got
Are cigarettes and red vines
Just close your eyes, 'cause, baby–
You never do know
And I'll be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show

George Thorogood and The Destroyers – "I Drink Alone" (1985)

2010/05/28

G's away, off to play,
so I'll be drinking alone, sitting…waiting by the phone.
Time for some blues to wash it all down. No energy to walk about town.

New Order – "True Faith" (1987)

2010/05/27

A favorite from New Order…

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty

….

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear

Paul Hindemith – "Symphonic Metamorphosis" (1943)

2010/05/26

Movement 1 – Allegro:

Momement 2 – 'Turandot', Scherzo (Moderato/Lebhaft):

Momement 3 – Andantino:

Momement 4 – Marsch:

…as performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Rafael Kubelik Studio Recording, 1953.

I can feel it. My metamorphosis has begun. Parts of me struggle against a new way, others drive ahead into becoming the new me. A different me. A me that I think this song, also known as "Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber", is perfect for, though I have not listened to it for a long long time. In another life time I had played it as part of an orchestra, an orchestra I may try to join once again.

Hopefully my metamorphosis is not into a cockroach form of myself as in Kafka's work by a similar name. By the way, here is an interpretation of Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" all you 'speech and debaters' out there will appreciate. (Any of you non-"speechees" should think of as a type of acting without any props, scenery, microphones, with time limitations and other constraints. It is a way for geeky performers to spend all their Saturday's during high school, in lieu of practicing [insert sport name here], playing [insert video game here], or doing other nefarious teenager-like activities, like sleeping in late.)

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five – "The Message" (1982)

2010/05/25

A solid beat. Some cool words. That's all you need. Maybe some tight jeans and high rise boots. The Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five even got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 for it. They were the first Hip Hop group added to the hall.

One of my favorites about this classic is right after the lines…

Don't push me 'cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to lose my head

…he does a crazy kind of singing laugh, and it totally works. Funny though, when I laugh like that I get weird looks.
