Jewel – "Pieces of You" (1994)

2010/07/31

Many times an artist's first album is the most genuine, the most telling and the most honest, in addition to being their best work. I think that is the case with Jewel, which I am reminded of today as I have reconnected with a friend who I know introduced me to Jewel among other folk artists, in another time and place.

Nancy Sinatra – "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" (1966)

2010/07/30

Yet another example of a cover that is better than the original. Thank you Nancy Sinatra!

The original "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" by Cher:

Dead Kennedys – "Holiday in Cambodia" (1980)

2010/07/29

I like to canoe. It is a calm, peaceful, solitary, and beautiful activity. There is an art to it akin to the artful gliding of birds who are flying for the sake of flying, using the wind to soar and seemingly hang in the air.

I went canoeing and have returned to visit with my family as our holiday continues on. Despite trying to take a moment to write this, the peace I had only moments ago has evaporated. Hopefully it will not morph into another kind of holiday, yet I am reminded of this song in particular.

So goes the family vacation… moments of extreme relaxation sprinkled among other moments where you just want to pull out your hair!

Fatboy Slim – "The Rockafeller Skank" (1998)

2010/07/28

Right about now, the funk soul brother. Listen once and it is certain to be stuck in your head, so push play with caution! For years and years I thought the lyric was "the funk SO brother", as though "brother" was a new way of saying "cool" or "groovy". Even though I was wrong, I still like it like that!

Weird Al Yankovic – "Fat" (1988)

2010/07/27

My cousin, nephew and I were quizzing each other on some Weird Al songs and lyrics last night and it all started with a reference to "Fat" during dinner. If mimicry is flattery, than parody is flattery + amiable jest. Occasionally a parody is meant to be more of an insult but I believe in Weird Al's case he genuinely appreciates all the songs he parodies.

For those of you who now need to contrast with the King of Pop's original, "Bad", here is Micheal Jackson:

Beastie Boys – "Sabotage" (1994)

2010/07/26

Nevermind what I said yesterday. Something in me has certainly changed though. Perhaps for the better? Making other people happy just doesn't seem to have the same appeal it once did. It kind of just makes me mad. Nor am I content spending hour after hour doing a single thing. I get anxious. I'm wondering if I am more like a 5 year old now, than when I was 5 years old.

PS: I'm surrounded by family and at times they are driving me crazy. I'm sure you all understand what I am talking about!

Whatever. Time for some sabotage.

Lindsey Ray – "Goodbye From California" (2009)

2010/07/25

Life is good, and although this song is about a break up of sorts, it is just so happy and bouncy in tone I count it as a feel good song!

Plus my site has been getting slower and slower for months. It was finally so bad I took the time to investigate and found it had to be a hardware issue. I contacted my hosting company, informed them that the shared database server was having performance issues. They insisted it must be my own connection, but when I provided all my evidence, who was right? That's right. Me. I've been a software engineer for quite a while now, so after telling my hosting company how to do their job I am feeling cocky now! And they fixed it so TSotD.com is back it its speedy self!
