Mikel Knight – "Texas Badboy (The Nashville Remix)" (2009)
2010/07/03
Here is a song that few will enjoy…
The other day I was drifting through rap songs on youtube when I was thinking rap / hip hop haven't branched out nearly as far as it could. In theory rapping is more like a style of singing. Between "spoken word" and "traditional singing" styles lives rapping. So in theory you should be able to rap with any style of backup music and instruments, not only urban sounds and urban themes. I immediately thought, "What about country rapping?" Has anyone tried it? Why not? I entered "country rap" into the search and Mikel Knight came up (not to be confused with the fictional character "Michael Knight" on the TV show "Knight Rider").
I think this song is pretty damn good. At least fun and different, yet familiar. So why do I say few will enjoy?
I find most people feel strongly against 2 musical genres in particular: country and hip hop. And those who like one or the other tend to definitely not like the other. It is as though country and hip hop are like polar opposites in the universe of music. I know it is totally cultural though. Hip hop has urban themes and imagery attached to it. Country is rural. The divide is classic, but unnecessary. The wall are imaginary and can be broken down, as proven by Mikel Knight and the other country-rap artists out there (and there are a few others!)
There is an album version (entitled "Texas Bad Boi" on the album "The Country Rap King Mixtape, Vol. 2") of this song too…
…but I prefer "The Nashville Remix". Enjoy! …if you can…
PS: Just to prove it can go the other way… that urban hip hop artists can throw a little country in their hip hop, here is Eminem's "Square Dance". I know it is just a touch, but it is there:

Just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean you should.
True, true… but we're not mixing Miles Davis with Hannah Montana here, are we? That would be like pickles and ice cream!
So, The Danielle, I take it you didn't like it?
it's just so… confusing.
A challenge to your mind. A challenge to your tastes. A challenge to your beliefs. A paradox, perhaps? What is up? What is down? What is hip hop? What is country? What is music? How will we continue on? All these things are in question thanks to Mikel Knight. I relish it, while others may recoil in fear for the future is more uncertain than ever now.
(…too much? Did I go too far? Yes. Yes I did.)
