deadmau5 – "I Remember" (2008)

2010/09/30

Another long day today for me. I'm going to need some beats to keep me going (and I think I'll spring for making a full pot of coffee)!

Feeling the past moving in
Letting a new day begin
Hold to the time that you know
You don't have to move on to let go

If the interjected words of wisdom in the video above are too distracting, here is the album version:

Tina Guo – "Apres un Reve" (2009)

2010/09/29

It appears I will never be allowed to leave work again. Our main file server is a desktop computer, and I made the mistake of rebooting it because I had to move it. Now it simply says the following on a black screen when I try to start it up:

"strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

Despite attempting many things thus far (including removing the RAID, replacing the battery, running diagnostics tests, booting from either of the hard drives) I have yet to find what the issue even is, let alone fix it!

I thought this song "Apres un Reve" (or "After a Dream" for those of you who took German or Spanish or whatever) by Tina Guo captures nicely the melancholy I feel as I sit waiting for one of the many diagnostics tests I am running to finish. I kind of get the feeling these tests may take hours, and still not tell me anything.

Oddly this next (bonus) song is also applicable to how I felt when it first happened and expresses my haste to try to fix the situation! Obviously based on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight Of The Bumblebee", Tina Guo's "Queen Bee" is an awesome addendum & interpretation. (…and kinda hot!)

Kasabian – "Processed Beats" (2004)

The harsh reality of running late on a Monday morning hits. Yet I need a song. This one will do quite nicely.

Broken Bells – "The Ghost Inside" (2010)

2010/09/25

I am nervous about The Shins. I had a chance a few years ago to go see them, but at the time I thought I was too old to go to concerts. A side effect of just turning 30 perhaps? Then The Shins have had some band turmoil. Some changes in its members, and though they are working on a new album, it will likely be quite different. Yet here I thought they were improving album after album.

Then Broken Bells came out, and I have avoided it for a while. Broken Bells is a composed of James Mercer (The Shins' lead singer and founder) and Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). It has been successful and yet in my mind, such solo projects tend to lead to more, and thus we have likely seen the best of The Shins. I also kick myself for not taking some of the musical opportunities I had, for they have likely passed forever and will never be the same. Change is inevitable though, and you have to accept that. It is just a reminder to seize the day! Carpe diem!

PS: This video featuring Christina Hendricks of "Firefly" and "Mad Men" fame, is pretty sweet. It happened to come up in discussion while hanging out last night and reminds me of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" a bit.
