Mumford & Sons – "The Cave" (2009)

2010/09/11

Today is September 11th. I know it will be one of those days remembered by all who were alive in the United States for the rest of our lives. It was a grave day for sure, not only for those who had family and friends who died that day, but those who have had friends and family die in the subsequent wars.

Has it all been worth it? I'm not so sure. Should we remember it as we do, year after year? I'm favoring "no" as the answer to both questions.

The War on Terror is a lot like the War on Drugs. Unwinnable. You win when there are not more, until there are more, and then you lose again. But who are you fighting? People who use terrorism as a tactic? (Nevermind the fact that terrorism is almost never a winning strategy for your cause and usually only unifies the opposition against the group using terrorism.) It is almost like trying to eliminate an idea. It is also a huge distraction from the real issues of the day:

- Economic Instability (a system plagued with greed, and dependant on perpetual growth, how could this fail?),

- the probable Energy Crisis (can you say "Peak Oil"?),

- the impending Water Crisis (why are we building cities in deserts again?),

- Species Extinction (don't forget, we are at the top of the food chain!),

- Climate Change (watch as London becomes the new Venice, and Venice becomes the new Atlantis!… or as I like to tell people, by the time I am old, I won't have to move to Florida, New York will be like Floria by then!)

- oh, and let's not forget the usual suspects: Disease, Hunger and Poverty

Also very few people die from terrorism. The annual averages are in the hundreds, maybe thousands, worldwide. Part of that is probably due to everyone putting security measures in place, but it kind of is mind boggling then to see statistics that say about 260,000 children, ages 9 to 18, die in car accidents each year worldwide. You'd think we'd all be working on even safer cars and roads instead of prepetual security upgrades at the airport and country borders.

Alas. Whatever is sensational on TV, just as 9/11 was, will strike fear into the hearts of man, even though the big bad wolves of our time are hardly the focus of our lives or the actions of our leaders. We hide in our own caves. *sigh*

So I would ask that you think about what it means to remember and focus on 9/11 and terrorism. To focus on one thing is often to forget another. And to focus on terrorism only shackles ourselves to our fear. Do we really want to perpetually do that? Can we every consider ourselves truly free until we are free of such fear? Do we really give a shit anymore if they ever find Bin Laden in his cave? I think not to all three.

Cause I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be
