Jens Lekman – "You Are the Light (By Which I Travel into This and That)" (2004)

2010/09/18

I just recently heard Jens Lekman and recalled a conversation G and I had about Morrissey. Morrissey had a certain style of singing, that during his time in The Smiths came across as unique and brilliant. A new flavor of singing and lyrical song writing, and that if anyone came too close they would just sound silly today. Perhaps Jen Lekman has pulled it off though? I actually thought it was Morrissey the first time I heard the song. Perhaps that is a bad thing though, to sound too similar. Then again I am very forgiving of the artist who sounds like another artist. Also, you may detect the accent is a touch off (Jens is a "Swedish indie pop musician residing in Melbourne, Australia").

PS: Now while sitting here, I'm thinking maybe I have it wrong. Maybe he is more like Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields.

PPS: I love that opening line paired with the video…

Yeah I got busted
so I used my one phone call to dedicate
a song to you on the radio
