Beach House – "Zebra" (2010)

2010/12/31

I've learned a lot this year… or rather taken things to heart that others have been telling me for years. "Don't sweat the small stuff." (Richard Carlson) "Very often we are our own worst enemy." (Louis Binstock) "If you're not having fun, you're doing something wrong." (Groucho Marx) … stuff like that.

I've also found that going with your gut instinct and impulses is being truer to yourself, and it saves a lot of time fretting and worrying about, which is rarely worth it. "Do, or do not. There is no 'try.'" (Yoda in "The Empire Strikes Back")

I have also learned that I like the sounds of zebras, duplicating them with G and my sister-in-law, and this song named for the magnificent beast. Listen for yourself:

Happy New Year Everyone!

Alistair Oakes and The Myth – "He Better Take Care Of You" (2010)

2010/12/28

I was fortunate enough to catch "Alistair Oakes and The Myth" performing the other night at a local venue known as "The Bug Jar". With a whiskey in hand, a loosened tie and pulled out dress shirt, this was no typical rock band. I likened their opening song "He Better Take Care Of You" to the sort of flavor harnessed by the likes of Stephen Merritt of The Magnetic Fields or Jens Lekman and I'd like to believe it may have broadened some horizons. Another piece, entitled "Wanderlust", was a spoken word song thanking (aparently members of the audience) for given a reason not to take all 300 pills, and other self diminishing acts of that ilk. Although not entirely local, with members hailing from NYC and San Francisco (and the drummer, who appeared to be freshly from the Apple Store and taking the shape of a new iPod Nano), I am happy to say that Rochester is not devoid of creative music.

Visit their bandcamp page for a listen!

Girl Talk – "All Day" (2010)

2010/12/27

Girl Talk - All Day

Those other songs I posted in 2010… yeah, never you mind all of that! You have got to listen to this!

Bask in the glory of a good mash-up! Most include 2 or 3, maybe 10 different songs. Girl Talk has raised the bar with "All Day" though, listing over 350 songs sampled in the over 70 minute song. Could it be the sign of the apocalypse or the dawning of a new age? Are we jumping on the wagon or falling off again. Time to find out!

PPPS: I am counting it all as one song, as Girl Talk intended it to be played, and as you should!

The Beach Boys – "Little Saint Nick" (1963)

2010/12/24

For me, today may as well be Christmas Day. My family has always celebrated on Christmas Eve, making it easy to see the in-laws on Christmas Day. It also makes for two solid days of Christmas, which is always nice.

As a kid though it kind of made Santa less plausible because the presents from Santa showed up during the day of 24th, not the night of the 24th as foretold in all the Christmas stories. The truth is there is a Santa though. Anyone inspired to give a gift out of compassion, love or friendship, expecting nothing in return, is Santa. May you have the joy of being Santa, and being visited by Santa this year!
