Emiliana Torrini – "Gollum's Song" (2002)

It has been two years since I started TSotD (The Song of the Day). Inspired by the song "Birds" by Emiliana Torrini I wanted to do this to share music that I fancied, and also to inspire myself to explore new music.
It is not always possible or easy to find the time to post a song every single day. My time is largely spoken for and I am not in the music industry per se, so it is a hobby of sorts. Still, I have found and shared lots of music I love that I would've never ever heard if I left the task to radio stations, commercial sources, or even my many friends and family (no offense!). That said, because of this blog I have made connections with bands and people around the United States that I never would've and they have provided me with remarkable music suggestions. I count myself fortunate, and despite my busy-ness at times, I carry on!
Today I would like to share with you "Gollum's Song" from "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers", and sung by Emiliana Torrini (though Björk was the initial pick). Björk's pregnancy prevented her, so we are fortunate they selected Emiliana, whose life has had deep sadness. Her boyfriend had passed due to an accident in 2000, and she stopped making music until she was called upon to sing "Gollum's Song" for the movie. She has since released two albums, and I am guessing currently either taking a break or considering retiring from the music scene since the birth of her son.
She has left us with a deliciously sad song, for when hope is but a memory. She is in my mind famous, and yet say her name to people who have seen The Lord of the Rings, and chances are they have never heard of her. Emiliana is a gem out in the open, and yet a secret delight. Enjoy!
