Album of the Week: Metallica – "Metallica" (1991)

2009/12/03

Track 4: The Unforgiven:

Also known as "The Black Album", Metallica's "Metallica" is THE Metallica album in my mind. Sure I've heard most of the others, but this is the one I go to first. Really I'm not much of a heavy metal fan compared to other genres, and without Metallica I wonder if I would've developed any taste for it at all. But how can you not love this album! When I am feeling that tinge of pissed, or perhaps some scorn for the world, or I just need to feel like I did back in the early 90s listening with my friends to feel bad ass even though we were anything but, this album is definitely a top pick for me. All you non-heavy metal fans should give it a try, you might just like it. Oh and when you do start to bang your head, don't stand too close to the wall. It hurts.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "The Unforgiven" being my favorite (though I think "Enter Sandman" is a very close 2nd).

Album of the Week: The Strokes – "Room On Fire" (2003)

2009/11/24

Track 2: Reptilia:

Don't let The Strokes fool you. Their songs may seem to all kind of blend together the first few times you hear them. The melody may not be the kind of tune you find yourself humming in the shower… at least not at first. They may seem to be a little "one note". However, once you are sucked in, you will love them and love them all. In fact I have been holding off on adding The Strokes to my "Must Own Albums" list because I was having a tough time picking which album. I have finally decided that "Room On Fire" is the one most likely to hook you with songs like Reptilia, Automatic Stop and 12:51 as the shiny bait.

Once you are hooked, listening to and loving the other two albums, "Is This It" and "First Impressions of Earth" will just be second nature, like opening another bag of your favorite favorite comfort food. Your ears will feel at home and never tire of each and every song.

…that is of course only true if you like any of their songs. Like one and I am convinced you must hear the rest. I'm not saying they have only one song, but I would say they have a sound and if you don't like it, then I pity you. If you do, then you have hit musical gold!

Oh and as a beginner drummer, they have really been great to play along with. The beats are steady, repeated, energetic, and generally not so difficult you cannot play along with some if not all of each song. G likes to play along with the bass parts too! Like The White Stripes, great music need not be impossible to play.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Reptilia" being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Eisley – "Room Noises" (2005)

2009/11/02

Track 11: Plenty of Paper:

Eisley

Last week on October 28th, G and I drove hours to see Eisley in Toronto for a meer half hour or so in concert. Where we live is not a good location for touring bands to come to, so we are frequently required to drive a distance to see most bands we wish to see, including Eisley from Texas. It did seem like a lot of effort to see Eisley, who was not the headliner, but it was worth it.

Eisley is not one of the most well known bands. Chauntelle, Sherri, Stacy, and Weston DuPree are all siblings and relatively recent addition to the band, Garron DuPree, is their cousin. They have toured under bands such as Brand New, Snow Patrol and Coldplay, thus adding to their credibility in the industry. I think they are a treasure in the musical world. Their songs contain elements from another world, light and solemn, but not without frolic. It was good to be able to see them perform and get a glimpse of their dynamic and personality. It was a pity they did not have more time, though they were indeed performing while quite ill. One of the sisters on guitar (Chauntelle I think) was unable to sing one of the songs and stopped it within the first measure or two, and was practically hunched over during the last couple songs, closing with "Invasion" from their 2007 album "Combinations".

They started out in the coffee shop run by their parents, and I am sad to say it would probably have been a better venue accoustically. The Phoenix Theatre in Toronto, though a very cool space for a club/music hall, had attrocious accoustics. The sound was flat and at times I'd swear the band was being drowned out by the talking and ambient sound. Aside from the venue, I also blame the guy on the mixing board who seemed almost lost during the sound check (never promising for the band). They would be much more suited to a venue intended for an orchestra or live theatre.

Regardless I hope Eisley comes to the area again sometime as the headliner. G and I did not stay for Sherri's husband's band, "Say Anything", the headliner (sorry Sherri… they're just not as good as you guys are). We did however do our regular trip to the Canadian grocery store to pick up the goodies we are unable to purchase in the USA like Ketchup Potato Chips (think Salt & Vingear Potato Chips with a little sweetness and a little tomato flavor… so good!), Coffee Crisp chocolate candy bars, and Kinder Eggs among others. Now that Mexican Coca-Cola is available in the USA, we passed on the Canadian Coca-Cola (both made with real sugar, unlike the high-fructose crap they sell in the USA… Why do we have to go to other countries to buy better Coke when it was invented here? I don't know.) Oh and of course we stopped at Tim Hortons, not the one in the grocery store we went to or the one in the gas station across the road, no the one on the corner between the two. (Yes, 3 Tim Hortons in sight of each other. Canadian's love their Tim Hortons!)

I think all you Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, Dixie Chicks, Imogen Heap, and Regina Spektor fans should check out Eisley if you haven't already. For those of you who like what you hear but do not know whether to start with the first or second album, I am suggesting you start with the first "Room Noises". It is a little more unique than "Combinations", and perhaps a little more solid in terms of a musical theme, though I love them both, so feel to get both.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Plenty of Paper" being my favorite. It was difficult to choose the 5 because there is not a song I do not like…

Track 1: Memories

Track 2: Telescope Eyes

Track 11: Plenty of Paper

Track 12: Trolley Wood

Unfortunately I could not find the songs anywhere online except rhapsody.com without any video, but at least you get 25 free listens! Enjoy!

Album of the Week: Danny Elfman – "The Nightmare Before Christmas" (1993)

2009/10/25

Track 3: This is Halloween:

Disney's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" set a new standard for Halloween songs when it came out, and I am still awaiting a collection of songs to match it. "This Is Halloween" is hard to beat on its own. The soundtrack is jam packed with Halloween imagery and uses tons of musical devices related to the holiday. Many artists have covered various songs from the soundtrack too e.g. Marilyn Manson's excellent version of "This Is Halloween":

This album (and movie) are a "must have" in my book. It may just be the pinnacle of Halloween culture in both film and sound. With the Christmas references, it makes an excellent soundtrack and movie all through the months of October and November, and is sure to delight anyone who likes Halloween, young and old alike. It even has a love story wrapped into it, if you're into the whole Franken-Babe – Dead Guy romance thing.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "This is Halloween" being my favorite.

Album of the Week: Arcade Fire – "Neon Bible" (2007)

2009/10/21

Track 5: Black Wave / Bad Vibrations:

Lately I've been listening to Arcade Fire obsessively. It is funny because I didn't like them at all when I first heard them years ago, but they grew and grew, and now I think of them as a staple. In fact they are so creative I think of them as one of the bands I want to inspire my own music. Each of their songs is so different with minute complexities and unique musical quirks that make them unlike other bands. The story telling nature of their lyrics also sets the bar high for me.

My suggestion you, the masses, is get both this album, "Neon Bible" and Arcade Fire's first album "Funeral" and listen to them once a month for a year. By the end of that year, I bet you'll be saying "screw this once a month bullshit, I'm putting it on repeat"!

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Black Wave / Bad Vibrations" being my current favorite (although my favorite seems to be switching from week to week).

Album of the Week: October Project – "October Project" (1993)

2009/10/11

Track 5: Eyes of Mercy:

Audio Stream: http://www.last.fm/music/October+Project/_/Eyes+of+Mercy?autostart

octoberproject

October Project is hard to describe. I like to think of October Project as being somewhere between Gothic Rock, Baroque Pop, and Enya. The regular inclusion of a cello also appeals to me, being a fellow cellist. The bellowing vocals of Mary Fahl and Marina Belica seem almost operatic, and so different from the grunge and hip hop that were taking over the airwaves at the time this album hit the local alternative radio station in 1993. October Project was truly something different to me and I still lament that after two albums the group disbanded, reformed later sans album, and then fell into limbo. Though not technically broken up since reforming, they have release only a handful of songs. They are a staple for me in the month of October and probably always will be, ad infinitum.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Eyes of Mercy" being my favorite. I should add there is not a single song I do not like on the album. If you like one, you'll probably like the whole album!

Album of the Week: Foo Fighters – "The Colour and the Shape" (1997)

2009/10/04

Track 2: Monkey Wrench:

It took me a while to realize I liked the Foo Fighters. As I mentioned before, Guitar Hero 2 really hooked me with "Monkey Wrench", and I have since expanded my appreciation to several of the Foo Fighter's albums. I still think that "The Colour and the Shape" is my favorite of them all and the one to have. I love exercising and running to it, working in the garage or the yard to it, basically anything that requires a little adrenaline and energy. The Foo Fighters will get your blood flowing and you will like it!

Here are my 6 favorites from the album, with "Monkey Wrench" being my favorite.
