Youth Sounds

I've been doing this whole "song of the day" thing for over a year now, and so occasionally I am approached via email by someone trying to get exposure for their band, small label, or whatever. I'm totally cool with it as long as they understand I only post songs that I like. I make no promises! Up until now, I have been unimpressed with the material I have been sent. Some of the music was either half baked, it just didn't move me, or they sent me so much I was overwhelmed and still haven't figured out if any of it is worth my time.

The first time I listened to "The Bit Parts" EP by "Youth Sounds" I thought it had promise. A few more listens and I'd even say this band from New Orleans is not only worth a listen, but they are worth some exposure! In "Smoke and Mirrors", the song that impressed me the most from the EP, they are reminiscent of the vocals of Sarah McLachlan (think of the album "Surfacing", "I Love You" in particular) mixed with a more Indie Rock instrumentation for a vaguely downtempo like feel. New and yet familiar. Refreshing. Definitely worth a listen, and I am interested to hear more than the three songs they've only *just* released.

I'm not sure where you can buy the EP yet. I'd say send a comment to the band here…

Robots in Disguise – "The Sex Has Made Me Stupid" (2008)

2010/04/13

OMG!

I happened upon this song and I was just listening to it without the video (which was playing in another window). I was liking it so I happened to catch a glimpse of the video (below). * jaw to floor * No shit. Robot sex. XXX. "Team America World Police" style. Completely ridiculous and yet completely dirty. And then it turned into a threesome. Whoa.

Despite some hesitation, I had to share this with you.

Here is the official video! NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

More investigation is definitely required …into the music, not the robot sex. Get your mind out of the gutter! Though I do work with computers and sometimes… it gets lonely.

Taylor Swift – "Love Story" (2008)

2010/04/09

I've turned a corner on Taylor Swift. She is alright after all. I think it is this song that convinced me too.

But let's not pretend she is doing anything "new". She is on a well driven road at this point. No trailblazing here. Of course trailblazers rarely win the "Album of the Year" Grammy.

Don McLean – "Empty Chairs" (1971)

2010/03/23

As I posted earlier today, this song was the inspiration for Lori Lieberman to write "Killing Me Softly with His Song" after she saw Don Mclean perform it in concert. I like it. It is very representative of the folk side of McLean. I think I like "Killing Me Softly with His Song" more though.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen – "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" (2007)

2010/03/03

As I said in a comment the other day

I've been listening to "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" the past few days. It didn't rock my world when it came out, the way Gorillaz's "Demon Days" did, but re-listening to it today something clicked for me. Perhaps "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" is better with age? Maybe I'm just hungry for more Albarn creations now and because the new Gorillaz is not out just yet, I'll take what I can get!?

Is it lame to quote yourself? Probably. Well whatever. Listen to the song already!

By the way, this "band" made up of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon (of The Clash), Simon Tong (of The Verve) and world renowned drummer Tony Allen, is not actually named anything at all, but they might as well be "The Good, The Bad & The Queen". I wonder if they'll make another one?

Spose – "I'm Awesome" (2009)

2010/02/27

G found this one. Too funny …and awesome, of course!

AND I'm awesome too apparently! It is awesome how many of the characteristics of his awesomeness I share. "I've got the swagger of a cripple." Check. "There's no voicemail nobody called." Check. "Physically the opposite of Randy Moss." Check.

Oh and as G pointed out, one of the instruments appears to be the "pan flute" on a synthesizer. That IS awesome!

Add N to (X) – "Plug Me In" (2000)

2010/02/15

I look at all the songs I've posted, and then I look at all the songs I hope to post eventually, and the numbers are crazy! Even looking at how many artists I have yet to share a single song from is daunting. If I didn't need to sleep… oh the hours I could gain! If only I could just plug myself in to keep my batteries charge. I'll just have to share some bonus songs more often I guess, like this one!

PS: For those who are aware of this song, and the very dirty, X-rated (or at least NC-17), not safe for work, video that goes with it, you can watch it here. If you are watching the original video for the first time, be warned! It is dirty!!! Why am I linking it then? Knowledge is power and yay to the freedom of speech! That's all I've got to say!
