50 Cent – "In da Club" (2003)

2010/09/03

I recently watched a documentary on Hip Hop named "Beef". What started out as a competition between entertainers trying to prove who was the best, escalated to the point they were killing each other. Character assassination became actual assassination. Asinine? Perhaps. I has certainly surpassed the point of insanity.

You would think after the premature deaths of 2Pac and Biggie Smalls, hip hop artists would've chilled the fuck out. But instead some, like 50 Cent, instigated "beefs" with artists to gain popularity, and it worked. You would think after being shot nine times (once in the face) he would've chilled, but no. His beefs continued, and his popularity grew.

It was a disturbing sort of documentary that indicates a culture of violence over little more than pride and oneupmanship. A culture now revered by many. Foreign to me and messed up, and yet as 50 Cent put it, it was either do what he could to make it or go back to the streets. The title of his first hit album says it all: "Get Rich or Die Tryin'". Can you blame him? Then again, when does it end?

Toad the Wet Sprocket – "Fall Down" (1994)

2010/09/02

I had a weird dream the other night. My right leg had been caught in some sort of machine and below the knee was stripped of all flesh leaving only the bones. And yet my foot bones, toes and all were still attached, and even movable at my command. My walking was impaired though, so I went to the doctor to see what I should do. However I kept asking the doctor questions and he kept asking questions right back. He was kind of a jerk about it too. In the end it was clear I was going to have to find my own "solution", but when I turned to leave, I fell down. I had lost control over the bones. That part of me was gone. Dead. It was then I woke up.

When will we fall down?

Pet Shop Boys – "It's a Sin" (1987)

2010/09/01

Being raised Catholic, like Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, I have a similar issue in the back of my mind at times…

When I look back upon my life
It's always with a sense of shame
I've always been the one to blame
For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common, too
It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a sin

There are countless sins listed in the bible. Some are plain ridiculous (e.g. astrology Deut 4:19; 17:3-7; Isa 47:13,14; Acts 7:42; Ezek 8:16). There also ins't a nice comprehensive list (because you are supposed to memorize the bible, after all). The most notable list is the 10 Commandments, which goes something like this (taken from one of the King James versions):

1. Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
4. Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
8. Neither shalt thou steal.
9. Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
10. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Obviously lots of things are missing from the list, or some things are over inflated. e.g. You would think there would be one that says "Thou shalt not rape." but apparently consensual cheating on your spouse ("7. Neither shalt thou commit adultery.") is a worse sin. Details details.

Three of them are all about being faithful to "the LORD they God". That is some prime real-estate on the list, and could've been written in one. Also it makes God seem a little selfish, petty, and needy. Doesn't seem right for "the all powerful almighty", you know?

Frankly the list needs some work.

While searching online, I happened across this list of "The Ten Indian Commandments" which is much more positive and comprehensive:

1. Treat the Earth and all that dwell thereon with respect.
2. Remain close to the Great Spirit.
3. Show great respect for your fellow beings.
4. Work together for the benefit of all mankind.
5. Give assistance and kindness wherever needed.
6. Do what you know to be right.
7. Look after the well-being of mind and body.
8. Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good.
9. Be truthful and honest at all times.
10. Take full responsibility for your actions.

Of course the "Golden Rule" also works in a pinch:

"Treat others as you would like to be treated."

Instead people are all caught up over same-sex marriage, abortion, the death penalty, etc. Blah blah blah! To paraphrase an English teacher I once had, she said "The world has enough geniuses. It needs more good people." Hear hear!

And as for all those sins, I say we chuck 'em and start over with the list!

Eric Johnson – "Cliffs of Dover" (1990)

2010/08/31

Sometimes I think it would be awesome to have music playing all the time, where ever I go. Little speakers poking out of trees, furniture, mailboxes, etc. A soundtrack for my life. Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" song would have to be on there for the excellent melody and awesome guitar. I mean just check out some of his riffs in this live performance…

And then I think, thanks to my assorted musical devices and other people playing music (and the singing of the birds and assorted insects), I kind of have that already! Music is everywhere.

EMF – "Unbelievable" (1990)

2010/08/30

This is one of those fun songs that was on the radio SO much for SO long, I figured I'd never have to own it or play it myself. I can't say I've heard it lately, so to perpetuate its endless roll, and as a good wake up song for the week ahead, I present "Unbelievable". And don't let their baseball caps fool you. They are British!

Alison Krauss & Union Station – "The Lucky One" (2001)

2010/08/29

You’re the lucky one so I’ve been told
Free as the wind blowindown the road
Loved by many, hated by none
I’d say you were lucky cause I know what you’ve done
Not a care in the world not a worry in sight
Everything’s going to be all right
Cause you’re the lucky one

You’re the lucky one always havin' fun
A jack of all trades a master of none
You look at the world with a smiling eye
And laugh at the devil as his train rolls by
Just give you a song and a one-night stand
And you’ll be looking at a happy man
Cause you’re the lucky one

I want to be the lucky one! …though G may object to the "one-night stand" bit. A beautiful song, none the less.

PS: About five years ago now, I was on a huge bluegrass kick about this time of year. So now when the cool crisp air of fall hits, I dig them out! Expect a few more in the next month or so!

Morcheeba – "Let Me See" (1998)

2010/08/28

Thus far I have spared you all from any of the music I hear in my yoga class. Occasionally while we are in a pose for a long time (usually a resting pose), my teacher will turn on music. It is usually a Zen influenced piece of music, that many of you would not appreciate, but today it was some songs from Morcheeba's album "Big Calm". Awesome!

I love their first album and this was the first song I heard off of it. I remember when I first heard it back in the 90s and my friend said "You've got to listen to this." And we listened to this song, and we were in a sort of awe because we had not heard anything quite like it. I love that.
