Aerosmith – "Sweet Emotion" (1975)

2010/08/05

Generally I've been avoiding any political comments or discussion here on TSotD.com. It tends to just upset me. But today I would like to give props to the Federal Judge Vaughn Walker in California who overturned California's Proposition 8 yesterday.

I do not understand or agree with those who oppose allowing same sex marriages. The arguments against allowing gay marriage are either religious, speculative, or blatantly bigoted & prejudiced.

Religion: Last I checked, the Freedom of Religion was still in the Bill of Rights. The definition of marriage as written in the bible or any other holy book, does not apply because of our freedom of religion. Some religions or individual churches welcome the bond between two people who love each other regardless of gender. (See a list here.) So your restrictive religion has no right to restrict other religions just because you say so. Your religion does not define our laws. Period.

Speculative: Some say it is bad and unnatural because gays cannot create offspring with each other. So we should put up other barriers to make their union even more difficult? With that kind of logic people of different races should not be allowed to marry either because of the possible cultural differences! And to those who believe it somehow "undermines" marriage as a whole, I think that perhaps you should all be more concerned about your own marriages and possibility of divorce than worrying about others'. Divorce rates were high before any state allow same sex marriages, so hasn't it already been undermined? Really I would anticipate a surge in the number of marriages, thus strengthening "the institution", if "the institution" is what you are so concerned about, and you aren't just using this speculation to cover up your own prejudices. And speaking of prejudice…

Prejudice: Go jump in a lake. Or climb a tree. Or fuck yourself. Whatever makes you happy. As I have expressed before (and Lily Allen too), I am not okay with your prejudice. We are not friends. Or if we are and I didn't realize you were so bigoted, then it has been fun, and perhaps you should reconsider why you hate homosexuals. Perhaps one made you uncomfortable because they found you attractive? Perhaps you liked it but didn't want to? Whatever the reason, go get over it. Another person's sexual decisions are their own to make and unless you are in a relationship of sorts with them, then it is none of your business.

…so to you 53% of Americans who still oppose gay marriages (per a Gallup Poll in May 2010), what the fuck!? If homosexuals are allowed to marry, you will still be allowed to marry. Your existing marriages will not disintegrate. If two people love each other then they should have the same legal rights as any other two (adult) people who love each other, regardless of age*, gender, race, shoe size, and whether they prefer their bread buttered or not. Love and sweet emotions will prevail!

PS: Sure I could've gone with Erasure, Elton John, K.D. Lang or a number of other homosexual artists, but I thought Aerosmith might draw in some of the crazy straight people who need a verbal… er… text based… spanking. Plus it is all about the emotion right, otherwise none of us would care?

PPS: * = I think below a certain age, marriage rights, heterosexual or homosexual, should probably be limited. What is that age? Well that is another debate for another day.

PPPS: I'm still not sure about polygamy, because simply from an Information Technology point of view it becomes a nightmare and my job is hard enough as is trying to keep track of one marriage at a time, let along a tree, linked list, or grid/map of marriages. If you want mass orgies though …go nuts, you horny bastards… but be safe!

Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters – "Tonight You Belong to Me" (1979)

2010/07/19

This is one of those songs you're going to hear from time to time. It has been covered by many many artists and it bound to be played to the end of time. Of all the versions I overheard my sister-in-law playing yesterday, I still think my favorite is the first one I remember hearing, the simple and pure ukulele version by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters. The full scene is here, but you should really see the whole movie if you never have. It is hilarious to this day!

The song is well suited to the ukulele and thus has become a favorite for ukelele players as indicated by this instructional video by Janet Klein:

…and also by the awesome cover and video by Dario y Rocio:

However, the original version was sung by Gene Austin (and written by Lee David and Billy Rose) in 1927, and it is quite unlike its ukelele covers:

Some of the covers in the 1950s and 1960s pay tribute to the original version though and are well worth a listen if you like the song.

Here is a version by Patience and Prudence in 1956 that reached #4 on the Billboard charts ensuring this song would be covered over and over:

Here is a version by The Lennon Sisters in 1956 on the Lawrence Welk Show which also added some fuel to the fire:

Here is a great version by Nancy Sinatra (Frank Sinatra's daughter) in 1963:

Here is another by The Honeys in 1969:

Dottie West's country style cover in 1977 is also quite good:

And finally, the last version I'd like to point out is much more recent, released in 2008 by one of my recent obsession bands, The Bird and the Bee:

Kraftwerk – "The Robots" (1978)

2010/06/03

That electronic sound you hear in lots of music these days? Yeah, you probably have Kraftwerk to thank for making young musicians take notice. I believe Kraftwerk's influence is being felt now more than ever as that electronic sound has penetrated just about every genre of music, in many cases creating entirely new genres of music. Techno and trance sounds, which were highly influenced by Kraftwerk, are now used as the background music in many pop songs only cementing Kraftwerk's legacy.

Rick Nelson and The Stone Canyon Band – "Garden Party" (1972)

2010/05/18

I did go to a garden party (yesterday) and this song came up, prompted by a friend. The chorus is familiar, but I cannot say I heard this song a lot growing up. This line I know though:

You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

My mom said it to me all the time. Oh and she lives by it!

I kid. Seriously though, the world will be happy to take everything you offer. So don't forget to be a little selfish sometimes. (But don't get carried away either now!)
