Buena Vista Social Club – "Chan Chan" (1997)

2010/03/06

As I said to my friend who passed this song on to me yesterday, this song is fascinating because it is both happy and sad at the same time. I had compared it to tequila, but perhaps the mojito, a Cuban drink, is a better analogy for something joyful with a touch of sorrow mixed in?

Listening to this you might think this sort of music, known as "Son Cubano", the norm in Cuba for the past 50 years, but no. The Buena Vista Social Club, which was an actual club where these musicians played, was closed along with most others after the Cuban Revolution. Cuban music like this was essentially put on ice in the 1950s until the late 1980s and 90s when a revival provided the conditions for this song and the album it is on to be. My message to the dictators and communists of the present and future, state run art is never a good idea. Censorship is one thing, but to essentially squelch entire genres of music is just unnecessary.

PS: Although the song was written in 1987, and many of the songs on the album are much older than that, the album was released in 1997. I've been posting the "release date" of the "album" of each song as close as possible, hence the 1997 date. Really it might as well be 60 years old, don't you think!?

L7 – "Pretend We're Dead" (1992)

2010/02/28

After a late night of RockBand and hanging with some friends, I have another highly influenced choice, "Pretend We're Dead", which I haven't heard in years and years. L7 wasn't as popular as some other grunge bands in the 90s (e.g. Pearl Jam, Nirvana), but they may be the most successful and famous female grunge band ever. I cannot even think of another that was all women. If I were a woman I would totally want to be in an all girl band. Alas.

Speaking of bands, the "band" I am in finally got together. We played along with a couple dozen songs, had a good time, and achieved little else. We didn't play this song by L7, but I think Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" and The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man" went well! It was great!

We were joking at one point about naming the band Maggot Head. (Really it wouldn't work unless we punked up a bit.) Sadly even our joking band names appear to be taken! See!

Emiliana Torrini – "Unemployed in Summertime" (1999)

2010/02/25

It was a year ago today I decided to post a song a day. I started on facebook, and then decided to move to a blog to share with the world. After over 450 posts and songs it is still fun! I hope the second year is just as much!

So why Emiliana Torrini for today's song? Well a year ago Emiliana Torrini's song "Birds" was playing in my car CD player and I realized I didn't know anyone else who liked Emiliana Torrini enough to listen to her albums. Thus no one had probably ever heard her song "Birds", a truly awesome song but not the kind of song that would ever get much attention or radio time. I wanted to share it, so I did on facebook. One thing led to another and TSotD.com is the plant grown from that seed. It seems only appropriate to have another Emiliana Torrini song for the 1 year anniversary.

I have selected "Unemployed in Summertime" no only because I am done with winter and ready for Spring and Summer to come but also it was the first song I ever heard by Emiliana. It is off her 4th album, "Love in the Time of Science", the first one promoted outside of Iceland, her home country. With out Emiliana TSotD may have never existed. Thank you Emiliana! And Happy 1 Year To Me!

Esthero – "Breath From Another" (1998)

2010/02/22

I have a slightly melancholy kind of beat going off, like an alarm reminding me the weekend is over and it is back to work for a long week. To make it worse I sit at the beginning of what will be several weeks of a grueling project that I am the point man for. A project that was supposed to be finishing up, but in truth it appears to have just begun. I suppose it could be worse (things could always be worse), but it could be better too!

James – "Just Like Fred Astaire" (1999)

2010/02/11

I picked up my new car last night. She is a black Ford Focus 2007 4 Door Hatchback. My bad day melted away and lacking any of my CDs or iPod or anything, I turned on the radio as I drove her off the lot. This song, "Just Like Fred Astaire", started just as I hit the road, and it was a perfect choice.

James has a tendency to show up at times of change in my life. Maybe it is self-fulfilling. My first post for this blog was James – "Born of Frustration" which was totally under my control. Last night… it was destiny.

Cornershop – "Brimful of Asha" (1997)

2010/02/05

Listening to the chorus of this song once was enough to get it stuck in my head so I've been singing it all morning! (G's fault!)

Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow…

…as explained here that line is really poetry, and so true.

For those who require the 1998 Fatboy Slim remix, here you go!

Green Day – "Basket Case" (1993)

2010/01/31

Well I'm not stoned. Despite my tendency toward slow speech, I am neither high nor from the south. The alternative, according to the opening, is far more likely. I am certainly feeling like I can't do anything right. Or perhaps I cannot do anything better? I am not smarter than I am, faster than I am, better than I am. It is a bit paralyzing. Yeah, I'm going with paranoid.

Go do something else. You've spent enough time listening to me whine.
