Fireferns

I was away in Brooklyn, visiting a couple old friends, on an impromptu-ish visit this weekend. New York as a whole never ceases to amaze me. The cultural diversity is always impressive. Every type of person appears to be present, and living together. They pass each other on the street, if nothing else. The city is like a giant cultural blender and it spills over into music. I heard Caribbean, hip hop, jug band, accordion and so many other forms of music over the course of a single day, half of it live and freely performed with skill on the streets. It is easy to see why people become intoxicated with the city and can barely comprehend a life anywhere else.

And yet some things are just too much for me. Everything is a bit expensive. Places that are only a few miles away can take an hour to get to. People are everywhere all the time, making for a restlessness that can only be escaped via a small dwelling called home for those who live there. You have access to everything and nothing at the same time. Sure there are diners, restaurants, groceries, and shops of all sorts everywhere, but the one you like or want may be a 20 minute walk or subway ride away. Most places have a sense of being "used". Sometimes it grants a certain character, but other times it just appears worn out. And sometimes it is just dirty like the countless gum spots stuck on the sidewalks.

I was happy to go for the brief time I was there, and then happy to leave again. I live in a small quiet kind of town where the locals all know each other by name. At night you can walk in the middle of the road for a mile, and only occasionally have to step aside for a car to pass. Good luck doing that in Brooklyn.

As part of my trip I went to see Fireferns, a side project of sorts for its two members. They were included in a variety show at Pete's Candy Store, named "Golden Scraps". It was quite a bit of fun to have poetry and spoken word pieces intermixed with theatrics and music, Fireferns performing as one of the many acts. The evening had a fun, impromptu feel to it, making it real and personal. From what I understand, it was the first time Fireferns really performed for an audience of that size, and the first "Golden Scraps". It was also the first time I had spent any time other than a passing visit to Brooklyn. I had so fine a time, hopefully it won't be the last time for any of those things!

Max Jury – "Change Your Mind For Me" (2010)

Max Jury

Sometimes I don't have to search for the music. The music comes to me! Sometimes the music sent to me, isn't so good. (To all you artists who contacted me, and then I never responded. I apologize. I keep poking at it, but it just hasn't hit a nerve yet.)

Max Jury is a different story though…

Max sent me a link to his myspace page a few weeks ago and I finally opened it up this week. I found myself pushing the play button on "Change Your Mind For Me" …oh …at least a dozen times in a row. As a songwriting major at Berklee College of Music in Boston, you might expect great things from Max. I think we have one such thing already, and I look forward to more songs appearing in his repertoire!

Check out his most recent songs here or his EP "Rhythm of the Rain" here!

Baths – "Aminals" (2010)

2010/08/17

This just came out last month and was recommended to me by a friend who saw Baths perform. There is an intoxicating and soothing quality to it. You electronic geeks out there will love it I think.

Janelle Monáe (feat. Big Boi) – "Tightrope" (2010)

2010/08/14

Before I split for Canadia today with G to go see Arcade Fire in concert on an island off the coast of the excellent city of Toronto, I thought I'd check out the opening musicians,The Sadies and Janelle Monáe. I have only been awake long enough to watch one video of each and I am a bit mesmerized by this song and video by Janelle Monáe, "Tightrope". There is an element of soul to the song that feels genuine and different. In this one song I am doubtful she is as some of her R&B-Pop brethren. I find myself excited to see her as well as Arcade Fire now. So without further adieu, wish us luck! We have to pick up our tickets en route, and then also catch a ferry because the concert is on an island. I get the feeling it is going to be a long and exciting day, filled with some moments of wonder between stretches of boredom.

PS: The Sadies seemed promising too. Should be a fun lineup!

PPS: Although very very different than the original song, this "Tightrope (Wondamix)" featuring B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco is worth a watch if for no other reason than to see Janelle dance!

Minus the Bear – "My Time" (2010)

2010/08/08

There was a set playing on WBER the other day an I was totally loving it, including this song. I had to cut it short because I realized I was going to end up late for a meeting if I didn't! Details. Details. But today… no meeting. Oh yeah baby. I get to listen to the whole song! Woo hoo! (Simple pleasures are the key to happiness, are they not?)

Arcade Fire – "Rococo" (2010)

G watched the live streamed concert of Arcade Fire at Madison Square Garden in New York two nights ago, and was raging about it all last night. She made me sit down and watch this video in particular. It is a delicious live performance if you like the flavors of drum and bass, wrapped in Arcade Fire packaging.

It also has inspired us to buy tickets to see them next Saturday in Toronto on Olympic Island!!! It should be a wild ride! We await the date with gleeful anticipation.

The album version is sadly not as rich as the live performance. Most of the time I am less satisfied by live performances, but in this case I think the song is enriched. The album version is like a new leather jacket, but the live one from Madison Square Garden is more like the broken in leather jacket that fits just right.

Also, for those who might have heard Arcade Fire once or twice, here or there, keep listening! If your experience is like mine, eventually you will question how you ever didn't like them! And start at the beginning with "Funeral" and then move on to "Neon Bible".

Crystal Castles – "Baptism" (2010)

2010/07/16

One of the comments on the video on youtube said "sounds like windows 95's sounds mixed with some porn running in the background" (by user IIShani). My thought was Atari game sound effects have reached the dance floor… and it is good!
