Franz Ferdinand – "You're The Reason I'm Leaving" (2005)

2010/04/27

This may be jumping the gun, but if today goes the way I hope it does, then this song is quite suitable (minus the "hanging from a beam" part, of course … I'm not talking about that kind of "leaving"). More to come tomorrow. For now I leave you with some lyrics stuck in my head…

Singin' well, fare thee well, fare thee well, fare thee well
I am leaving, yes I leave it all to you…
You're the reason I'm leaving (Leaving alone)
If I'm leaving we don't stop livin', you know

Top 10 Best Albums of 2009

2009/12/31

The end of a year. The end of a decade. The end of an era perhaps. I anticipate a year of change. "Spiritually, ecumenically, grammatically"… well, maybe not ecumenically, but definitely musically …and grammatically.

This past year has had several songs and abums I loved. I would say these are my "Top 10 Best Albums of 2009":

1. Franz Ferdinand – "Tonight"

Franz Ferdinand's "Tonight" is the winner in my mind. I still am gushing over it months later.

2. Metric – "Fantasies"

Metric's "Fantasies" is not too far behind and has really inspired some of my drumming.

3. Röyksopp – "Junior"

Röyksopp's "Junior" is like a shiny new toy you cannot help but play with and show off to your friends.

4. Coconut Records – "Davy"

Jason Schwartzman's music is good. I don't think he should stop acting because I like his work in that medium too, but Coconut Records is quality.

5. The Sounds – "Crossing The Rubicon"

I have been a little obsessed with these post-punkers this year so of course I had to include their latest album on this list!

6. Owl City – "Ocean Eyes"

Adam Young totally seems like the nice guy who cannot sleep and writes awesome Postal Service influenced songs in his basement.

7. Grizzly Bear – "Veckatimest"

These guys have a mesmerizing quality and I still cannot put my finger on it. Heads blowing up perhaps?

8. Matt & Kim – "Grand"

The album is good, but "Daylight" is genius in my opinion. So simple, and yet so complex. I still am working on Kim's drum line.

9. Animal Collective – "Merriweather Post Pavilion"

I kept hearing about these guys and finally gave them a listen. I like. I like.

10. The xx – "xx"

The xx is the only "new" band on this Top 10 list, and I only *just* got their album, but I like what I hear so much they are on the list!

Now to be fair, there are still a lot of albums on my "to do" list from 2009 so I reserve the right to add to this list. I'm still discovering music from over 10 years ago, so I am serious. Also I only recently aquired the "Animal Collective" and "The xx" so I reserve the right to rearrange it too if they sink in and I find myself all a twitter.

(Huh… I just realized Twitter has ruined the phrase "a twitter". Maybe it is apropos though. People do seem to be "a twitter" about Twitter. I am still betting eventually the tweeters out there will realize it is just microblogging… blogging with severe restrictions… and thus probably not going to last the test of time. People tend not to favor the thing that has severe restrictions. Microblogging = severe restrictions. And yes, I realize I am a user too, but I really only use it as a channel for my RSS feed. I digress.)

Check out the Top 10 and report back here. I want to know if you like them or not. Let me know what your top 10 (or top 3 or whatever) are too!

Album of the Week: Franz Ferdinand – "Tonight" (2009)

2009/05/12

Track 1: Ulysses:

I bought this album by the Scottish band Franz Ferdinand shortly after it first came out. (Yes, they are named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination eventually led to World War I.)For the past two months I've been listening to it constantly and obsessively in the car especially. It is so energetic, fun, and guaranteed to get you singing and dancing. There is a purposefully rough suaveness to the lyrics and music I only wish I could embody.

Some mornings I feel like my "song of the day" is a farce because half the time it seems one of these songs is really the song stuck in my head. I could hold it in no longer. Although this album has not stood up to the test of time (yet) I think it needs to be my Album of the Week and is definitely a Must Own Album.

To quote myself from my post on Ulysses (which is weird I know): "I have been loving the whole album since I bought it the day after it came out (1/27). This is quite possibly the most exciting song ("Ulysses") and album I've heard from 2009 so far. So, unless you have a heart condition (no seriously, there should be a warning on it, it is that good!), stop what you are doing, and turn up the volume and push play!"

I am kicking myself because I missed them on their North American tour. Next time.

Here are my favorites from the album, with "Ulysses" being my favorite:

Track 2: Turn It On

Track 3: No You Girls

Track 7: What She Came For
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmSwhYD18DE

Track 8: Live Alone

Track 9: Can't Stop Feeling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3Yv2Juq4gI

Track 10: Lucid Dreams (New Album Version)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dl98kUWgQrc

It was tough to pick the 5… so for this post I decided 7 was the new 5. (My blog. My rules.) The album is too good. Oh and make sure you check out the 2nd part of "Lucid Dreams" (starting at 4:45) where they are electro jamming! It has a nice sharp industrial new wave fusion kind of sound to it. Too cool.

Franz Ferdinand – "Ulysses" (2009)

2009/04/16

I said it when this was my song of the day on 3/9 and it is still true today… This song is HOT!

In fact I have been loving the whole album since I bought it the day after it came out (1/27). This is quite possibly the most exciting song and album I've heard from 2009 so far. So, unless you have a heart condition (no seriously, there should be a warning on it, it is that good!), stop what you are doing, and turn up the volume and push play!
