L7 – "Pretend We're Dead" (1992)

2010/02/28

After a late night of RockBand and hanging with some friends, I have another highly influenced choice, "Pretend We're Dead", which I haven't heard in years and years. L7 wasn't as popular as some other grunge bands in the 90s (e.g. Pearl Jam, Nirvana), but they may be the most successful and famous female grunge band ever. I cannot even think of another that was all women. If I were a woman I would totally want to be in an all girl band. Alas.

Speaking of bands, the "band" I am in finally got together. We played along with a couple dozen songs, had a good time, and achieved little else. We didn't play this song by L7, but I think Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" and The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man" went well! It was great!

We were joking at one point about naming the band Maggot Head. (Really it wouldn't work unless we punked up a bit.) Sadly even our joking band names appear to be taken! See!

Mudvayne – "Dig" (2000)

2009/12/07

Sometimes I'm in a bad mood. G loves those days. She runs and hides (figuratively) and tries not to make too much sound (literally). I'm feeling much better now, but this morning and last night, the guy with the blue braided beard, yeah that was totally me. I told G I was sorry. I yelled at one of the cats last night, and it sounded more like I was going to eat him I'm guessing. The cat is unharmed I assure you. It barely even registered with him. He is fearless (or deaf… we're not entirely sure).

I guess I'm feeling the stress of the season, without the spirit. Time for some yoga… or perhaps a sedative… or perhaps a stiff drink. Why choose?!

Dog Fashion Disco – "Acid Memories" (2005)

2009/10/26

The opening to this song caught my attention and conjures images of monsters coming to get you. Though the song is not about that, it is disgusting and creepy on it's own. Read the lyrics here.

I recall a scene it's Halloween,
And I am dressed as a drag queen,
Peaking to the point of no return,
I met a man, I shook his hand,
He spoke I could not understand,
He was covered in flies and afterbirth

Gross. The flies wouldn't be so bad, but anyone covered in afterbirth is definitely gross.

Type O Negative – "Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)" (1993)

2009/10/21

A Halloween favorite from my friend PK, and I think a good song for some costume pointers for the ladies…

Yeah, you wanna go out 'cause it's raining and blowing
You can't go out 'cause your roots are showing
Dye 'em black
Black No. 1

Little wolf skin boots
And clove cigarettes
An erotic funeral
For witch, she's dressed
Her perfume smells like
Burning leaves
Everyday is Halloween

…nothing will attract your Halloween victim … er … mate, like the smell of burning leaves. Black No. 1, both a dye and a perfume perhaps?

Oh baby, Lily Munster
Ain't got nothing on you!

Marilyn Manson – "Putting Holes in Happiness (Nick Zinner Remix)" (2007)

2009/10/17

I played Guitar Hero 3 not long ago, and this song is stuck in my head. I like this remix by Nick Zinner, guitarist for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, better than the original (probably just because of the rocking beat and guitar riffs), but you decide:

I think that with Halloween approaching it is only right to start playing some Halloween friendly music. In fact I'll try to give you a different one each day from now until Halloween. There is so little actual quality "Halloween music" that isn't gimmicky or kitschy. I've always thought of Marilyn Manson as a good pick for Halloween though.

To prove my point, listen to "The Beautiful People" and tell me it does not incite ghouls and goblins:

Primus – "John The Fisherman" (1990)

2009/05/24

Whenever I hear Primus my ears perk up because they are just so different. The atonal made palatable. This is probably my favorite by them now thanks to playing it 5,000,000 times in Guitar Hero II. Though "My Name Is Mud" is a close second (click to watch and listen). The bass part is too cool.
