The Verve – "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (1997)

2010/04/15

Such a good song. I don't care how many lawsuits The Verve had! It was worth it. The fact it is still one of the top 300 songs sold on Amazon is a tribute to that fact… er… strong opinion.

Right from the opening lyrics…

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die

I find myself today listening to this song on a precipice. The end and the beginning all a blur. Ultimately though, I am trying not to be a slave to money. Not to chase every dollar I can. Quality of life needs to take some priority, or else what is the money for? And perhaps "I can't change my mold" but there are things I can control to start heading down a different road.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen – "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" (2007)

2010/03/03

As I said in a comment the other day

I've been listening to "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" the past few days. It didn't rock my world when it came out, the way Gorillaz's "Demon Days" did, but re-listening to it today something clicked for me. Perhaps "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" is better with age? Maybe I'm just hungry for more Albarn creations now and because the new Gorillaz is not out just yet, I'll take what I can get!?

Is it lame to quote yourself? Probably. Well whatever. Listen to the song already!

By the way, this "band" made up of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon (of The Clash), Simon Tong (of The Verve) and world renowned drummer Tony Allen, is not actually named anything at all, but they might as well be "The Good, The Bad & The Queen". I wonder if they'll make another one?

The La's – "There She Goes" (1988)

2010/02/21

"There She Goes" is stuck in my head this morning after I quoted it earlier to a friend. I'm starting to wonder how my much of speech and vocabulary are just regurgitated bits of song lyrics …and is that a bad thing?

James – "Just Like Fred Astaire" (1999)

2010/02/11

I picked up my new car last night. She is a black Ford Focus 2007 4 Door Hatchback. My bad day melted away and lacking any of my CDs or iPod or anything, I turned on the radio as I drove her off the lot. This song, "Just Like Fred Astaire", started just as I hit the road, and it was a perfect choice.

James has a tendency to show up at times of change in my life. Maybe it is self-fulfilling. My first post for this blog was James – "Born of Frustration" which was totally under my control. Last night… it was destiny.

Cornershop – "Brimful of Asha" (1997)

2010/02/05

Listening to the chorus of this song once was enough to get it stuck in my head so I've been singing it all morning! (G's fault!)

Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow…

…as explained here that line is really poetry, and so true.

For those who require the 1998 Fatboy Slim remix, here you go!

Space – "Neighbourhood" (1996)

2009/10/24

Space is fun. They sound like vampires trying to do britpop lounge singing. The lyrics are a good time too…

in number 18 there lives a big butch queen
he's bigger than Tyson and he's twice as mean
in 666 there lives a Mr. Miller
he's our local vicar and a serial killer

I do wonder if the fluffy white thing the lead singer is wearing was the best choice for the video. It is actually kind of distracting. I've been listening to this album for 13 years and I only just saw the video today. I can't help but feel they could've done a lot more with it.

Keane – "Spiralling" (2008)

2009/08/17

As G said the other day, and as I eluded to before, Keane is kind of like a "chameleon". They kind of sound like a whole bunch of other bands. A whole bunch of really great bands at that! I barely knew of them earlier this year, but now they have grown on me and I have now listened to all three of their albums countless times. I also made "Under the Iron Sea" one of my "Must Own Albums".

I highly recommend you give them a try!
