Today is St. Patrick's Day, but much to my dismay it has mostly been degraded to represent a day for drinking, at least in my area of the USA. Annoying twenty year olds fill the bars to celebrate the drink in excess, and perhaps the color green, but I think they are missing much of what Ireland is about. Sure Guinness is the best beer in the world, and a wee bit of Irish Wiskey isn't too bad either, but there is more to the Irish and Ireland. I think of the Irish as hard working salt of the earth people. Farmers and fighters, but melancholy and pensive in nature too. I'm a quarter Irish by blood yet I am barely Irish. Third generation so mostly I know the music (and the Irish guilt) thanks to my mother, who had several Celtic influenced albums in her collection. Sure there are the Irish pub songs, but I tend to think of the more melodic traditional tunes when I think of Irish music.
I think this song "Siúil a Rúin" a traditional Irish tune, sung here by Connie Dover, is a perfect example of what I am talking about.
