Vijay Iyer Trio – "Mystic Brew" (2009)

2011/01/12

I really like this song, and it took me a few listens to realize part of the reason is the background is the same sample used by A Tribe Called Quest in "Electric Relaxation". The sample is of a really great song that deserves its own billing, but…

You'll just have to wait and see what song I post next! (Though it probably won't be that difficult to guess if you know… or read "tags".)

Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra – "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" (1935)

2010/12/18

This big band version really captures the energy of the busy busy days before Christmas. (Those of you "making Christmas" know what I am talking about.) The song was written by J. Fred Coots & Haven Gillespie and was an instant hit when only the sheet music was in circulation! Impossible today, for sure!

Also we mustn't forget the 1970 Fred Astaire version, with its awesome prologue either!

I want a magic snowball!

Nat King Cole – "The Christmas Song" (1961)

2010/12/10

I was thinking of doing unusual Christmas songs this year, and maybe I will, maybe I won't. Regardless I'm kicking off the list with a classic, one of Nat King Cole's many renditions of The Christmas Song (AKA "Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire" written by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells).

PS: To those who cannot handle some Christmas music, see you in a couple weeks!

Three Dog Night – "Joy to the World" (1970)

2010/11/11

Fear not. I'm not starting up any Christmas songs (yet), though I suppose this could be one. Why not?

Also known as "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog", I keep humming this song to myself the past few weeks. It's just such a "happy happy, alright, yeah, everybody now!", kind of a song!

PS: Even though Three Dog Night gets most of the credit, it was written and released around the same time by Hoyt Axton. Poor Hoyt.
