Sleigh Bells – "Infinity Guitars" (2010)

2010/11/16

I'm looking for something a little more abrasive today. Abrasive like a baseball bat.

I chased a kid with a baseball bat once when I was in grade school. That was a good time. Fear not… I didn't hit him at all. I just chased him for over an hour all over my neighborhood. He had spit in my face, so he deserved it. After that, he didn't fuck with me once. …ah, the good ol' days of my sorted youth. I wonder where that punk is now?

And G thinks I am joking when I say "oh, how I love the screams of small children in the morning". (Our neighborhood kids like to scream on their own, without me chasing them with a baseball bat.) Little does she know. *Evil Laugh Heard Faintly Across The Land*

VV Brown – "Everybody" (2009)

2010/10/06

We all strive to be different, unique, and yet not so different that we are considered weird and outcast. I know it is a tough "tightrope" to walk, oh wait, that is a different song.

Janelle Monáe (feat. Big Boi) – "Tightrope" (2010)

2010/08/14

Before I split for Canadia today with G to go see Arcade Fire in concert on an island off the coast of the excellent city of Toronto, I thought I'd check out the opening musicians,The Sadies and Janelle Monáe. I have only been awake long enough to watch one video of each and I am a bit mesmerized by this song and video by Janelle Monáe, "Tightrope". There is an element of soul to the song that feels genuine and different. In this one song I am doubtful she is as some of her R&B-Pop brethren. I find myself excited to see her as well as Arcade Fire now. So without further adieu, wish us luck! We have to pick up our tickets en route, and then also catch a ferry because the concert is on an island. I get the feeling it is going to be a long and exciting day, filled with some moments of wonder between stretches of boredom.

PS: The Sadies seemed promising too. Should be a fun lineup!

PPS: Although very very different than the original song, this "Tightrope (Wondamix)" featuring B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco is worth a watch if for no other reason than to see Janelle dance!

Gossip – "Listen Up" (2006)

2010/07/03

listen up the weekend is here
doesn't matter whether you dance
or sit back and open a beer
good times for you given the chance

…oh and those aren't song lyrics, just a little poem I wrote to celebrate the long weekend! The bass in this song rocks, doesn't it?

Franz Ferdinand – "You're The Reason I'm Leaving" (2005)

2010/04/27

This may be jumping the gun, but if today goes the way I hope it does, then this song is quite suitable (minus the "hanging from a beam" part, of course … I'm not talking about that kind of "leaving"). More to come tomorrow. For now I leave you with some lyrics stuck in my head…

Singin' well, fare thee well, fare thee well, fare thee well
I am leaving, yes I leave it all to you…
You're the reason I'm leaving (Leaving alone)
If I'm leaving we don't stop livin', you know

The Black Ghosts – "Anyway You Choose To Give It" (2008)

2010/04/19

Like the trees that are about to burst full of leaves, I am so ready to celebrate, to run in the wind screaming with joy. I'll just have to contain it for now though and do little happy dances in my mind. I keep quoting Aesop's fable "The Milkmaid and Her Pail" saying "Don't count your chickens before they hatch!"

By the way, as G pointed out, isn't the wood block (or perhaps it is a muted cowbell… either way) in this song totally addictive? The little simple things sometimes hook you in!

The Actors – "Not A Beast" (2010)

The Actors - Foreign Stares EP

It is a rare pleasure to actually know a musician who has been serious enough, dedicated enough, and artistic enough to publish their work. I am fortunate to know Phil Maves of "The Actors". I also know Phil is well "read", and I should say "listened", as far as music is concerned. It shows in the music.

The songs by The Actors are no accident. Pulling from influences across the Alternative Rock and Indie Rock spectrum, it is difficult to pinpoint the sound and simply lump in The Actors with others that came before. The Actors meld Experimental Rock influences (like Radiohead), with Post-Punk & Dance Punk sounds (New Order perhaps), a touch of College Rock swirled in (not unlike The Pixies), and even a spot of Brit-pop (think Blur) at times. The Actors seem to be filling in spaces between these sounds and genres, adding their own style and personality, and creating a new sound all at the same time. They are something very familiar and yet you have never heard anything quite like it.

Today's song "Not A Beast" from The Actors' latest EP, "Foreign Stares", is no exception. Rock? Dance-Punk? Both perhaps? I don't know. I do know a couple of listens and it has been stuck in my head since. With no LP yet but a strong start with songs like "Not A Beast" and "Heat In The Street", from their previous single, "Anticipate Heat", I think we can expect great things from The Actors in the future. (No pressure Phil! …and congratulations to you and Dan Leech on the recent EP release too!)
