2011/02/24

I heard this playing on the radio, and despite having heard it countless times before, I had to turn it up and sing along!

The Chords

This has got to be one of G's favorite songs. She lights up every time it comes on.

While trying to search for this song I discovered The Chords and "Sh-Boom" really kicked off Doo Wop's popularity in the 1950s. The song is definitely one of the earliest Rock and Roll hits.

I found this video on the "origins of Sh-Boom". I love how the origins are inspired by little sounds in the their lives.

Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs – "Stay" (1960)

2009/05/31

At 1 minute and 37 seconds, this is the shortest song to ever hit the top of the US charts. I almost always listen to it two times in a row when can. "The song was written by Williams in 1953 when he was only 15 years old. He had been trying to convince his date not to go home at 10 o'clock as she was supposed to." …and that is how music is made.

By the way, if you haven't seen Dirty Dancing, do it already. Although it is an 80s movie many of the songs are "oldies" including this song.

Dion and the Belmonts – "A Teenager In Love" (1959)

2009/04/28

Although I am partial to the Doo Wop songs, I have to wonder why this is the song stuck in my head this morning. Perhaps I am feeling like a teenager in love. Perhaps it was the spinach I ate last night. Who knows?!

Barry Mann – "Who Put the Bomp (in the Bomp, Bomp Bomp)" (1961)

2009/04/09

I'm a sucker for a Doo-Wop song. To top that, Barry Mann (backed up by The Halos) made this song that pokes a little fun at doo-wop at the same time. Fun, funny, and brilliant! Rama Lama Ding Dong Forever!

Also I want to say boo to the big radio stations companies out there. I miss the oldies station on the radio. When there was nothing else to listen to, there was always the oldies station with two decades of hits to play over and over and over.

Billy Joel – "The Longest Time" (1983)

2009/04/04

I was a Billy Joel fan early on and this song always stuck out as one of my favorites. I love the "Doo-Wop" sound with only a bass to back it up. Listening now, I have to believe Billy Joel will be one of the musicians people will still listen to hundreds of years from now.

Of course what got this song stuck in my head was watching a comedy clip on The Family Guy of cave men inventing singing by singing this song.
