Télépopmusik – "Breathe" (2001)

2010/07/15

This song is like slowing down time only to realize there are still so many beats. A single moment can still have more to observe, absorb and feel than we could possibly consume and process. Think about it too much and it can be overwhelming to the point you can do nothing other than just breathe.

By the way, an alternate version, that I also recall being broadcast, is here:

Of course both of those are abridged versions for the videos. The original full version from the album is here:

Youth Sounds – "Smoke and Mirrors" (2010)

Youth Sounds

I've been doing this whole "song of the day" thing for over a year now, and so occasionally I am approached via email by someone trying to get exposure for their band, small label, or whatever. I'm totally cool with it as long as they understand I only post songs that I like. I make no promises! Up until now, I have been unimpressed with the material I have been sent. Some of the music was either half baked, it just didn't move me, or they sent me so much I was overwhelmed and still haven't figured out if any of it is worth my time.

The first time I listened to "The Bit Parts" EP by "Youth Sounds" I thought it had promise. A few more listens and I'd even say this band from New Orleans is not only worth a listen, but they are worth some exposure! In "Smoke and Mirrors", the song that impressed me the most from the EP, they are reminiscent of the vocals of Sarah McLachlan (think of the album "Surfacing", "I Love You" in particular) mixed with a more Indie Rock instrumentation for a vaguely downtempo like feel. New and yet familiar. Refreshing. Definitely worth a listen, and I am interested to hear more than the three songs they've only *just* released.

I'm not sure where you can buy the EP yet. I'd say send a comment to the band here…

Sneaker Pimps – "6 Underground" (1996)

2010/04/06

Ok so yesterday I was ready for blood. But I am not a punch you in the face kind of person. I've been punched in the face a few times. It hurts. No, I planted seeds that may grow to punch people in the face while I sit back and watch. Then again nothing may happen. Slow and steady wins the race. Either way, I feel at least somewhat satisfied. It'll calm me down, talk me down from this place.

Lemon Jelly – "'95 – Make Things Right" (2005)

2010/03/08

I hate the realization of the work week coming back. The weekends lately just serve to recharge my batteries enough to make it until the next weekend. Perhaps a little downtempo will help set the pace in my mind? I bet my boss will be none too happy when I refuse to take my headphones off though!

By the way, this song, and all the other songs on the "'64-'95" album by Lemon Jelly, have a sample from the year in the title. This song uses a sample from Monica's 1995 R&B song "Before You Walk Out of My Life", and from it creates what I think is a better song.

Massive Attack – "Teardrop" (1998)

2009/07/11

Late to bed, early to wake. Everything in slow motion.

…and this is the perfect song for it.

You may know this song from the opening credits of the show "House". If you like this song, you should listen to the rest of Massive Attack's material, or at least Mezzanine.

Frou Frou – "Breathe In" (2002)

2009/07/06

I know this song is stuck in my head because I had considered the possibility of Frou Frou's only album, "Details", being the album of the week. This song total captures my mood this morning too, including a series of questions and statements that seem to make no sense when all tied together or spoken aloud. (See the lyrics to know what I mean.) Perhaps some coffee is in order.

Air – "Cherry Blossom Girl" (2004)

2009/06/22

I love the blend of the rhythms of all the different parts in this song. Individually they're all so active, but together they blend into an ambient mesh. I've been listening to Air for years, but only just now did I learn "The name AIR is a backronym for Amour, Imagination, Rêve which translates to Love, Imagination, Dream." I always thought "air" was descriptive enough!
