War – "Low Rider" (1975)

2010/02/07

The other day I actually got a ticket from a county sheriff for having a crappy car. Awesome, right? Her muffler fixed, I was able to get the ticket dropped, but I think my relationship with my car may need to come to an end.

I love my car but she is old. 14 years old, and I've had her for 10. She has served me well, but lately I have to have something non-trivial fixed on her at least every 3 to 6 months, and now she is getting me in trouble with the law! She works now, but tomorrow who knows what will be next to break.

I've been looking at alternatives, and I found a little number not unlike a car I wanted to buy 10 years ago but could not afford at the time. The car I'm thinking about is a Ford Focus 2007 ZX5 SES Hatchback … Black:

I found one in the area and tested it out the other day. I going to go see it in the daylight and if it is looking good, I'll pull the trigger to buy it. My new "low rider". The hatchback will be handy if I want to move something like a dog, a set of drums, or who knows around town. Neither my current car nor G's, which is a 2006 Ford Focus and has proven to be a great car for the cost, is exactly a good car for moving anything around. The SUVs and crossovers out there are way to much money though. Most people out there are a little bit insane for spending so much on cars, and then the gas to run those cars. Oh and then there is the the environmental impact. You're being selfish people. Tsk tsk.

I like a small car too. They fit in parking spaces (and more importantly my itty bitty garage). They don't handle like a boat. Parts are cheaper to replace. I do like that they feel like "low riders" now given how high up all the other vehicles are these days. I suppose they are less safe in some ways, but only because they have to share the road with vehicles like the Hummer.

The money to buy a new car (and by new I mean used of course… I don't believe in buying brand new cars), is a bit scary. I currently enjoy minimal debt. I haven't had a car payment in 8 years. Then again, I do have the saddest looking car of anyone I know. Hmmm. I'll keep you all posted on my decision, but for now I'll be humming a little "Low Rider" as I mull it all over.

Victor Wooten – "A Show of Hands" (1996)

2009/12/02

I found this totally cool bass guitar playing by this artist, Victor Wooten. It is as though he is playing two guitars at the same time. Totally wild! Then I discover I'm like 13 years late to the party because the song came out in 1996. Well whatever. This has happened recently with another artist. It is certain to happen again. Better late than never. Check it out!

Commodores – "Brick House" (1977)

2009/11/19

I am feeling a little funky tonight. I have made the decision to put some hard dollars behind my blog. New hosting. New domain. That's right… I'll be moving and unlike the rental space I'm in now, I have more control over my new space. I can paint it red if I want. Hmmmm.

I knew this day may come, and I feel alright. Gigidy gigidy. Wordpress and my wee blog msotd.wordpress.com has served me well, but I require more freedom, and now I have it. I just need to pack up my stuff and move. Perhaps this weekend?

I'd tell you the new domain, but the paperwork hasn't cleared yet and I don't want to jinx it. Short domains can be hard to come by. msotd.com and sotd.com were taken, but I got my third choice. More to come later. Until then, stay cool. Stay cool.

KC and the Sunshine Band – "That's the Way (I Like It)" (1975)

2009/10/16

This is totally one of those songs you've heard all your life. It is way over used by the media, commercials and sporting events. Yet when was the last time you heard the whole thing played from start to finish? I'm so old, I'll probably be wondering where I left my car keys next.

Earth, Wind & Fire – "September" (1978)

2009/09/23

I realized a while ago I had zero Earth, Wind and Fire songs in my collection. I have corrected that oversight. To celebrate here is my favorite song by them, and hey what do you know… it IS September! Let the dancing begin!

Prince and the Revolution – "Kiss" (1986)

Prince

Why was this song stuck in my head this morning? I must be a freak.

Prince is a freak too. His style is certainly different. I think if I tried to sing like him, I'd probably hurt myself. The whole turning himself into a symbol thing was weird. Who does that!? The ego he must have. Generally I don't see what the big deal is myself, although he does have a few good songs, like this one.

OutKast – "Hey Ya!" (2003)

2009/06/29

OutKast is too much fun. Some of the lines are too cool. "Lend me some sugar, I AM YOUR NEIGHBOR!"

I cannot remember if it was G or me who recognized it first, but the real hook in this song, the real genius, is the extra 2 beats. There are 20 beats in each set of measures, and then there are 2 extra beats making the last measure half as long. Over and over. Gives it a subtle funky syncopation that you're addicted to before you realize what you're addicted to.

PS: I put all my album cover images in a directory and seeing them all together looked cool. I used a little collage making program so you might see what I mean, including all the album covers I've posted so far. If viewing a sea of albums you know and love all together does not make you happy, then are you really a music lover? I know it makes me happy.
