Cee Lo Green – "Fuck You" (2010)

2011/01/05

Hey… it is a good song. And the word "fuck" has been getting a lot of "cleaning" lately thanks to songs like this. It is certainly heard more and more in songs and movies, which might be a bad thing actually… allow me to explain…

"Fuck" is an extreme expression. It is one of the last words available to us to express intense anger, dissatisfaction, astonishment, etc. If the "cleaning" proceeds and the word becomes something like the more commonplace and tame "crap" or "damn", then will we be able to truly express ourselves? Possibly not. Perhaps it should be a word saved for "special occasions"?

Galactic (feat. Cheeky Blakk) – "Do It Again" (2010)

2010/09/13

Love the song, but I don't know if I can watch the video more than once. It is provocative. Hair where there usually isn't so much usually is. (And probably not safe for work.)

Lipps Inc. – "Funkytown" (1980)

2010/09/10

It is so bad, it is good. One of those infectious songs that you listen to a little bit because it tickles some part of your brain, until you realize that even brief exposure means it will be stuck in your head all day. And for me, it has the bonus of being the name of my wireless network at home. I'm sure it makes my neighbors wonder. I like that. He he!

PS: "'Funkytown' is often considered to be one of disco's last stands." according to Wikipedia. How funny is that!? Like Disco is a cowboy in bell bottom pants in some western, in a town named "Funkytown", making its last stand for mirror-balls, chest hair and polyester. Sadly Disco died, but people like me keep dragging its dead corpse out for a good time!

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – "100 Days, 100 Nights" (2007)

2010/08/20

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: The perfect remedy when looking for some new stuff that feels like the old stuff. Brilliantly they limit themselves to sound equipment, recording methods, and even instruments that would've been available in the 1970s. The latest gadgets are totally overrated.

Janelle Monáe (feat. Big Boi) – "Tightrope" (2010)

2010/08/14

Before I split for Canadia today with G to go see Arcade Fire in concert on an island off the coast of the excellent city of Toronto, I thought I'd check out the opening musicians,The Sadies and Janelle Monáe. I have only been awake long enough to watch one video of each and I am a bit mesmerized by this song and video by Janelle Monáe, "Tightrope". There is an element of soul to the song that feels genuine and different. In this one song I am doubtful she is as some of her R&B-Pop brethren. I find myself excited to see her as well as Arcade Fire now. So without further adieu, wish us luck! We have to pick up our tickets en route, and then also catch a ferry because the concert is on an island. I get the feeling it is going to be a long and exciting day, filled with some moments of wonder between stretches of boredom.

PS: The Sadies seemed promising too. Should be a fun lineup!

PPS: Although very very different than the original song, this "Tightrope (Wondamix)" featuring B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco is worth a watch if for no other reason than to see Janelle dance!

Erykah Badu – "Honey" (2007)

2010/08/04

I'm certainly lacking in my Rhythm and Blues collection. I know I like some of Erykah Badu's stuff, including this song in particular, but I am open to suggestions if anyone has any to broaden my horizon. There is certainly much I have never heard, but then again I suppose that is true across all genres. I have a day job to keep, you know!
