Gary Jules & Michael Andrews – "Mad World" (2001)

2010/01/18

I had a nightmare of sorts last night reminding me of this song, which many of you may know from the movie "Donnie Darko".

There was a valley with sand endlessly pouring into the abyss in the middle. The sky was clear but eerie for the sun hung at the end of the valley just high enough to light the valley. It seemed to be setting yet never seemed to get any closer. The end of the valley appeared so far away as to be invisibly abstracted by dust kicked up by the sand. I was under the impression I had died and my body & soul were stuck in the sand, helpless to ride it into the endless abyss. I seemed to ride it forever never actually getting closer to the abyss, yet it was inevitable. It seemed almost fun for a moment until it grated my skin and bits of me appeared to wear away as they were sand blasted by the flow. Occasionally I would pass someone or something I had known in my life, but any attempt to reach them, to touch them, ultimately failed. I was moving too fast. As I passed each I knew it was the last glimpse I would have of each. By the end there there was only anguish.

I awoke well before I reached the bottom, if there even was one. Perhaps I would've disintegrated before I reached the abyss. My heart was pounding and muscles were tense. I was unable to simply return to sleep. It was very vivid and upsetting at the time, but such are nightmares. I miss the days when I slept soundly night after night, not a care in the world. It was not the first and likely will not be the last.

By the way, this song is a cover. The original was by "Tears for Fears". This is a rare case where I think the cover improves upon the original. It captures the sorrow of the song better.
