Ravi Shankar – "Raga Rangeela Piloo" (2002)

2010/07/17

It is my impression that this guy, Ravi Shankar, is to the sitar what Jimi Hendrix is to the guitar. I have a few of Ravi Shankar's many albums. Listen to some of his works and I think you'll see what I am talking about when I say he is a legend. Or just watch the video and you can see that he is truly a rock star, a rock star of another time and place, but clearly a rock star! And, unlike Hendrix, he is still alive and playing music at the age of 90, and still building on to his immense legacy. He is truly an inspiration all around.

By the way, I am guessing "Raga Rangeela Piloo" was written earlier than 2002, but then again maybe not. I cannot find any recordings or references to it other than the BBC "Ravi Shankar – In Portrait" video. Also unfortunately all the online videos of it cut off at the end, so if you want the thrilling conclusion, you'll just have to get the DVD!

If you Hendrix & Shankar fans are now jonesing for more here is another from the same concert entitled "Raga Anandi Kalyan":

Shankar Mahadevan – "Breathless" (1998)

2010/06/02

Over the years I have worked with many people from India. Occasionally we have discussed music. Despite feeling a little versed it is still largely foreign to me. Much of what I have heard are the cheesy pop musical ballads produced by Bollywood. Shankar Mahadevan is of Bollywood fame, but produced this song outside of any film. It propelled his fame and success in India.

What is interesting is this song is apparenly sung all in one breath. I use to think that this gimmick was faked, but now that I have taken yoga for years and experienced how you can expand your lung capacity and breath duration, I can see how it might be possible, particularly by someone from India where "breathing" is truly topic of study.
