Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – "Home" (2009)

2010/06/29

I bought a new car. It didn't take as long as I thought it would. I was being picky so the car I wanted (a duplicate of the one that was crashed… specifically a Black 2007 Ford Focus Hatchback) was not available in all of New York State. Fortunately I found a dealer willing to shop around and found one in Missouri for a reasonable price. I took her for a spin and she fit like a glove. So I brought her home.

Funny how personal a car can be. It is important though. It is your home as you travel to places that are not your home. A lot of time and energy is expended buying a car and then keeping it in working order. How it feels on the road is something you become accustomed to such that you object to the way other vehicles handle. It is familiar. Sure a car is just a thing, but the one you pick is an extension of yourself, much like what kinds of clothes you wear.

Hopefully I can make this one last more than 3 months!

Chris and Thomas – "Time to Find Out" (2006)

2010/02/10

Audio Stream: http://www.last.fm/music/Chris+and+Thomas/_/Time+to+Find+Out

Chris and Thomas

I've reconnected with an old friend. He is going through a rough time right now, and will be for months. It'll take some time, but he'll be alright. It can be hard to see the light when you're in the middle of a tunnel, but you just have to keep walking knowing that if you walk long enough you'll reach the end. It'll take some time…

Take some time to move on,
and when it's gone, it's gone.

Time some time to find out
that living life is all that life's about.

Grant-Lee Phillips – "Spring Released" (2001)

As TMBG said once a upon a song about a song other than this one…

This song is dedicated to all you modern-day troubadors out there
And I think I know who you are

…and I know it is not spring yet, but I'm almost -done- with this winter.

Neutral Milk Hotel – "Oh Comely" (1998)

2010/01/26

Before The Decemberists, there was Neutral Milk Hotel. I know this can be a sore point to some Neutral Milk Hotel fans who might view The Decemberists, and others like them, as little more than copy cats. You see Neutral Milk Hotel disbanded well before the others arrived. Given the scope of The Decemberists' body of work, I think The Decemberists have more than proven their worth. I believe we are witnessing the emergence of a genre that has yet to be properly named too, all started by Neutral Milk Hotel. Those who arrive first deserve a great amount of credit and I think Neutral Milk Hotel helped to blaze the trail others now enjoy. The way I see it, The Decemberists and others are paying tribute to the memory of Neutral Milk Hotel and carry the torch.

Oh comely
I will be with you when you lose your breath
Chasing the only
Meaningful memory you thought you had left

It is odd to me, the people who hate artists are "too" similar. So wait… you like Band A, but you hate Band B for sounding like Band A? So if Band B sounded less like Band A you might like them? Wow that makes no sense. I think people get too caught up in who came first, the politics, and the assigning of who is deserving, and lose sight of the art.

By the way, "Neutral Milk Hotel" is an odd name, isn't it? G calls them "Three Incongruent Words". So true.

Bright Eyes – "At The Bottom Of Everything" (2005)

2009/11/23

I've got bad news for everyone. YOU'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!

Yup. Me too!

It will happen, mark my words. It really isn't worth worrying about though. It is kind of like going to the dentist, to work, or to the bathroom. You're going to have to do it eventually, so you really shouldn't focus on it or become obsessive about it. Just go with the flow. Allow the movie of your life to unfold during those times when you have no control.

Now I'm not saying be careless or anything. Also do take some control when you can. But don't fret about the stuff you cannot control, including your eventual demise, and hope that a song such as this is playing as your plane plunges into the ocean. It is really quite upbeat for such an event, and thus better than some other "last song" possibilities I think…

e.g. Frédéric Chopin's Marche funèbre for piano in C minor, Op. 72 No. 2

Fleet Foxes – "Your Protector" (2008)

2009/11/06

A couple of you may have noticed I did not write this post in the morning as usual, but rather at night. My corporate overlords have decided to "help me" by providing my team with "resources from India". Part of my job now is to teach them my job, which also means I will be less productive in my job. I am of the belief this is the beginning of the end for my current job but I have no choice. To facilitate this change I will be going to work in the early morning. I am excited about the prospect of seeing sunlight during the winter months by getting to leave work early but it is bittersweet. Perhaps if I am really successful in the transition of knowledge I will be laid off and then be able to see sunlight all day! Or perhaps because of this post I will be laid off much like Dooce and my blog will sustain me. However, given I have earned about $0.24 in referrals to Amazon after 7 months, perhaps I should fill out that application for food stamps now. I am tempted to simply refer to my Indian counter parts as "my replacements" at work in front of my boss and my boss' boss. Spiteful? Perhaps. Funny. Definitely!

Yum! Food stamps here I come! I do like a plate of beans and rice!

Anyway, you can expect my songs of the day to be coming to you at night instead of during the day for the foreseeable future. I know all my regular readers may be put out by this… all one of you… but be strong, you and I, we will survive! On the plus side I am far more verbose and hopefully quippy in the evenings when I'm all awake fat and happy. (In the mornings I am just fat.) I can't tell you how many times in the morning I have spent 15 minutes writing 2 sentences and literally said "crap" out loud. As I reread all I have written tonight it does all still have a "blah blah blah" quality to it. I am just not a writer I guess. Perhaps I should quit this blogging thing and go be a real DJ. Would you be sad? Would I be sad? Would my future radio listeners be sad when they hear be blabbing? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Moving on…

So I've been listening to the Fleet Foxes' album, also named "Fleet Foxes", over and over this week. At first it just seemed like some nice chill background music, but now I am hooked. I want more, like zombies want more brains to eat. I am saddened that it is the only album, and yet overjoyed that there are additional songs by them I have yet to hear from the extended versions and the singles. The Fleet Foxes are good and I must share them with you. This song is one of the better ones I think, but the album is very solid and likely to appear on my "Must Own Albums" list in the not so distant future. Recent obsessions though… right now!
