I had a dream that I was a mariachi, My band and I were performing at a grand wedding. I was on guitar dressed in a slick white jacket with white buttons and a sombrero. We played so well, people were cheering for more, and it was like my hands were magical. I could not miss a note. If only!
Naturally I wanted to hear some mariachi music once I awoke. So here is "Jarabe Tapatío", which most people know the opening to, but not the rest of the song. (Shame on you!) You may even just know it as the "Mexican Hat Dance" song. It is a classic written in the 1800s though the recording above is from the 2000s. Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan is a band that was created in 1897 and has survived to the present, obviously not with the original members, but holding true to the traditional music, styles and genres of Mexico. I have to believe their rendition of this jarabe song is as classic in sound as the song itself.
By the way, I'm sure all of this is the result of watching "el Mariachi" the other night!
