Have you seen "Avatar" yet? I loved it. The story, the special effects, everything. Just loved it. G took my speechlessness to be indifference, but no. I was very impressed. The Matrix meets Fern Gully meets McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern, with touches of Star Trek and Lord of the Rings too. Yet it is its own thing. Entertaining, engaging through out, excellent visualizations. I saw it in 3D which made it all the more remarkable. A classic love story. A classic tale of an impending ethnocentric society forcing its way upon others. An epic tale. Loved it. You must see it.
I was disappointed to leave the theatre, and return to my human life afterwards. To walk out into the advertisement strewn lobby of the theatre. Out into the parking lot where a forest once stood. To drive home past plaza after plaza. To think about how horrible we humans really are. To be human myself. To know I have been selfish at times. Wasteful. Things died so I might live as lavishly as I do. Did they all need to die? Probably not. I am ashamed.
We have raped the land and each other. We have a society where accumulation of wealth is all that matters. The blue sky has no value on the stock market. Love alone will not feed you or provide clean water. Even now our ice caps are melting. A few cold snaps this winter and the greedy selfish corporate insterests have lead the stupid & easily manipulated into changing their opinion as to whether global warming even exists. Spend an hour reading about the measurements, the observed changes to the planet, the percieved risks of climate change, and you too will be convinced that what is happening to our planet requires our time and attention and action, unless you are insane. And for all you economists who whine about how environmentalism hurts the economy, fuck you! You are irresponsible hacks! Anyone with an ounce of risk management knowledge knows "the costs of mitigating climate change are 'insignificant' relative to the risks of unmitigated climate change".
So where are our leaders? Whether natural or not, human induced or not, does it matter? We should be striving for SUSTAINABILITY in all our systems, whether they be environmental, economic, political, etc. Yet for whom is sustainability a top priority? Not Washington. Not Wall Street. (Don't tell me Hollywood!) How many of us are taking even the first steps ?
As for raping each other… let's talk about Haiti. I would argue that we killed most of the people in the earthquake. Most of the deaths were preventable if we had given a shit about Haiti in advance of the earthquake. If they had not been so poor they would've had the infrastructure to help themselves more. Or the structural integrity to ensure fewer buildings would collapse so easily. However the pursuit of wealth and power put the citizens of Haiti in such a state they were (and still are) doomed. The money pooring out to help Haiti now is nice and all, but really it won't alleviate the poverty, and eventually there will be another natural disaster to kill them easily. Shame on us. Shame! We can do better!
Further evidence we can do better is this, here I am saying you should see the movie Avatar, which has grossed over 1.2 Billion US Dollars internationally. Aid to Haiti thus far: $507 Million. You might come to the conclusion that seeing a good movie is three times as important as helping those in need. And that doesn't even take into account the $890 Million that Haiti is in debt. I know Avatar has been out longer but still. Our priorities are definitely skewed as a species. "I see you." should be all that really matters. I am glad Avatar is selling so well in the theatres, but I hope the message it portrays of community and stewardship sinks in even once the ooo's and ahh's of the special effects have worn off.
(The least you could do at this moment is donate as much as you spent seeing Avatar, if you've seen it, to the charity of your choice, whether it be Haiti or Heifer's for Humanity or whatever! Yes I am guilting you. Suck it up and shell out $10 or $20 already! To ensure I'm not a hypocrite I just gave $30 to buy "a flock of chicks". …Oh and switch your light bulbs to fluorescent bulbs already!)
By the way, I'm not as in love with this song as other selections. It is very typical Rhythm and Blues which is fine. There is so much of it! It reminds me of the movie though, so you'll have to indulge me.
