A favorite from Lily Allen which is probably stuck in my head because I was listening to her albums the other day. It is a little song, with a nice fast past, about the world we live in.
Do you think, everything, everyone, is going mental,
It seems to me that it's spiraling outta control and it's inevitable,
Now don't you think,
This time is yours, this time is mine,
It's temperamental,
It seems to me, we're on all fours,
Crawling on our knees,
Someone help us please
Oh Jesus Christ almighty,
Do I feel alright? No not slightly…
PS: Oh hey look I've posted a lot of Lily Allen and didn't even realize it. Well she is really good so you'll just have to deal with it! You should listen to a lot of her anyway!
I am very much at the end of a relationship today as I leave my job. We have been through good times and bad. Over almost 7 years you build up a lot of history and baggage as well. Today I will try to leave that behind. It is a bittersweet moment for I will certainly miss many of the people I have worked with over the years and some of the people I have said good bye to I may never actually get to see again. Time will tell.
Lily Allen's "Littlest Things" was going around and around in head as I came to this morning after a night of reminiscing and drinking. It is perfect for the mood and the moment as I say good bye.
In support of my brother, I drove into the city and marched in a Gay Pride Parade recently. It was a lot of fun. The one part that surprised me was when we reached the protesters. In this case they were all "bible thumpers" with big signs and mega phones telling us how evil we are, how we're going to hell, how much smiting and burning for all eternity we should expect, and all that good stuff. At the time I just hooted and hollered over their spew, and passed them, waving my little rainbow colored flag in their faces, but let me go a bit further now.
For starters, I have two words for these bigots, as expressed in today's song by Lily Allen…
Many may believe the translators were "blessed" and thus the interpretations are perfect and free from error. But even for those who subscribe to the most extreme statements, like the ones in Leviticus 20:13 (New International Version of the bible) "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.", I would have to argue that you are cherry picking. A few lines before it, the bible also says in Leviticus 20:9 "If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother, and his blood will be on his own head." Meaning cursing your parents is equal a sin to being a homosexual. And not long before that it says in 19:19 "Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.", meaning cotton-polyester blends are also sinful. List out all (or even a handful) of the assorted laws and sins from the bible and collectively this list appears to be ridiculous.
Oh but there is more…
I have not fully expressed my anger at the closed minded protesters and those who agree with them. So I must question, are Christians good? Are believers and followers of god good? If you believe in the bible, the "word of god", perhaps you should watch this video reviewing some portions of the bible where god commits or condones Rape, Slavery, Torture, Child Abuse, Animal and Human Sacrifice, Murder, Genocide, Stealing, and Lying, thus questioning if god is actually good. Perhaps god is evil?
Part 1:
Part 2:
Perhaps I should be protesting outside of churches every Sunday? I'm not that kind of asshole though. However I do like to wonder "why is faith in god good"? I have yet to hear a good solid answer from anyone. If you have one, please, bring it on!
Fortunately G was not with my brother and I during the parade or else she would've been throwing things at the protesters and then we would've been arrested. (The police were out in force.) It is easy to say people like the protesters do not deserve our time and energy, and they should just be ignored, but they and their ilk have convinced entire states to do bad things like make laws that actually prevent equality, and perpetuate hatred, fear and bigotry… and THAT IS EVIL! (If the laws of the bible become actual law, then I'll have to be put to death for buying cotton-polyester blend shirts!) They must be countered and called out for the evil ones they are.
As Lily Allen put it…
So you say
It's not okay to be gay
Well I think you're just evil
You're just some racist who can't tie my laces
Your point of view is midieval
Fuck you
Fuck you very, very much
Cause we hate what you do
And we hate your whole crew
So please don't stay in touch
I kept hearing this song on the radio, for like a year now (though it has been out for three). I love it every time I hear it but they never said who it was afterwards. Today I was thinking about it and I decided to search until I found it. Fortunately it didn't take too long.
I love the opening bit in the video where she is looking for a blend of half the genres out there. I feel that way all the time. I believe the real musical story of the past decade has been a lot more about fusion of different styles and genres than it has been about the creation of truly unique ones. Have we collectively reached a creative barrier? Perhaps, but doubtful. I think it is more likely that we just want to be able to listen to our entire music collection at once.
