Time for a mashup! This one was on my mind this morning.
Never heard of a mashup? Wikipedia says it "is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs".
In the 1990s, when this form of art really started to take off, most DJs would simply take the vocal from one song and combine it with the instrumental parts from a totally different artist and song to make a new song. For example, this one is a classic "A vs B" mashup of Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady" and Britney Spears' "Opps! … I Did It Again", which cracks me up every time (note thid YouTube Video is still the original Eminem one): Eminem vs. Britney Spears – Oops The Real Slim Shady Did It
It is easy to say many of these mashup DJs are *barely* artists. They didn't create the original songs and may not have any more artistry than a 4 year old making a collage.
…BUT…
Some mashup DJs have take mashups to mush higher levels of sophistication, mixing and blending together snippets and bits of many songs in ways hard to even imagine. They may not be "potters" making the tiles themselves, but rather they are "mosaic artists" who then assemble the individual tiles into something entire new and unique. That is an art form in itself.
Today's song of the day is a mashup by DJ Earworm. The 4 songs are:
- Golden Boy feat. Miss Kittin – Rippin Kittin (2002)
- P.J. Harvey and Thom Yorke – The Mess We're In (2000)
- Human League – The Things that Dreams are Made Of (1981)
- Corey Hart – Sunglasses at Night (1983)
Click each to listen to each song individually, and then go back and listen to today's song of the day to understand the true genius.
For another example above and beyond today's song of the day, here is DJ Earworm's "United State of Pop 2008 (Viva La Pop)" YouTube video where he has combined Billboard's "Top 25 hits of 2008". Yes, 25 songs combined into one. MP3 available here for free. Also I should note that some, like DJ Earworm, have even started doing "Video Mashups".
Wild!
Now I'm sure there are some copyright legality issues around this sort of sampling. But I've never seen a mashup artist trying to sell their works, and DJ Earworm is very clear on his site that he "is not the author or owner of the copyrights" and "the artist or publishing company can contact me, and I will take these tracks offline". And also "If you like the mashups, support the artists and go and buy the originals…they are easy to find."
I actually do not have any "Miss Kittin" or that "Human League" song yet, so I will be purchasing those two shortly.
Expect more mashups in the future. Sometimes they're just so good (or so funny).
