Felix Mendelssohn – "Spring Song" (1844)

2010/03/14

Spring is coming! G and I had planted a gazillion bulbs last year, and now little bits of green are poking through in our flower beds. Several crocuses are just about to bloom heralding the end of winter. Just today I planted eggplant and tomato seedlings too. Gardening may not be exciting to most people, but I enjoy a bit of gardening. It makes March seem a little less sucky. Generally I hate the gray wetness that is March here in Rochester, so looking ahead to April, May and June is helpful.

What better song is there to play as my soundtrack than Felix Mendelssohn's "Spring Song" (or "Frühlingslied" in the original German)? The full name of the song is "Songs without Words – Book 5, Op. 62 – No. 6 Allegretto grazioso in A major", but the short name, "Spring Song", is more memorable for sure. I like the recording above but unfortunately I don't know who the performers are. It was originally written for piano too, so any purists out there may prefer this recording:

Sometimes it is good to take a break from the modern music, put on some classical and take a breath.
