Album of the Week: Metallica – "Metallica" (1991)

2009/12/03

Track 4: The Unforgiven:

Also known as "The Black Album", Metallica's "Metallica" is THE Metallica album in my mind. Sure I've heard most of the others, but this is the one I go to first. Really I'm not much of a heavy metal fan compared to other genres, and without Metallica I wonder if I would've developed any taste for it at all. But how can you not love this album! When I am feeling that tinge of pissed, or perhaps some scorn for the world, or I just need to feel like I did back in the early 90s listening with my friends to feel bad ass even though we were anything but, this album is definitely a top pick for me. All you non-heavy metal fans should give it a try, you might just like it. Oh and when you do start to bang your head, don't stand too close to the wall. It hurts.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "The Unforgiven" being my favorite (though I think "Enter Sandman" is a very close 2nd).

Apocalyptica – "Nothing Else Matters" (1998)

2009/11/30

G, a couple friends, and I did some impromptu jamming yesterday. I was prompted to pull out my cello. I was hesitant for a moment, and then I remembered this song played by Apocalyptica. It was awesome playing my cello along with the electric guitar, bass guitar, and drum set. There is certainly not enough cello in rock and roll, but then again I am partial.

I totally drooled over Apocalyptica's album "Inquisition Symphony" when it came out. You may recognize "Nothing Else Matters" as classic of Metallica's. I thought the idea of playing heavy metal with classical instruments, and especially a quartet of cellos, was so cool! (We never did this kind of song in my high school or college orchestra!) Over 10 years later I am still geeking out about it.

The cover is SO different than the original and yet, pays tribute to it, and compliments it beautifully. AND I love that the lines between classical music and heavy metal are blurred. Why choose between one and the other when you can have both? It really blew my mind at the time and I have been convinced ever since that the barriers between musical genres are entirely artificial, and those that tear them down are to be commended for their bravery and creativity.

Metallica – "Enter Sandman" (1991)

2009/05/14

Perhaps it is the ominous dark sky and winds this morning that caused this song to pop into my head.

I don't know a single heavy metal fan who does not like Metallica. "Enter Sandman" is classic too. So if you are not a listener of heavy metal, consider this a litmus test for whether you ever could be or not.
