Sherman Brothers – "Let's Go Fly A Kite" (1964)

2010/11/14

Yesterday I happened to say "my work here is done". It is a phrase that I always knew was not my own, but I use it from time to time. Really a lot of things people say are variations on quotations from film and literature. Still I decided this one was worth looking up.

FIRST I found Noël Godin, the guy famous for ambushing Bill Gates in 1998 who then said "my work here is done", but I knew he was too recent.

SECOND I also found references to "The Simpsons", including "Marge Vs. The Monorail", after the monorail crisis is resolved:
Leonard Nimoy: Well, my work here is done.
Barney: Whaddaya mean, 'your work is done'? You didn't do anything.
Leonard Nimoy: [Chuckles knowingly] Didn't I?

THIRD I also found Mel Brook's 1974 movie, "Blazing Saddles":
Sheriff Bart: My work here is done. I'm needed elsewhere now. I'm needed wherever outlaws rule the west. Wherever innocent women and children are afraid to walk the streets. Wherever a man cannot live in simple dignity, and wherever a people cry out for justice.
Townspeople: Bullshit!

But even that seemed to recent.

FOURTH, digging deeper, I found the 1932 suicide note of the man who made my hometown of Rochester, NY what it is, George Eastman founder Eastman Kodak:
"My work is done. Why wait?"

(I should add that George had his reasons… "In his final two years, Eastman was in intense pain, caused by a degenerative disorder affecting his spine. He had trouble standing and his walking became a slow shuffle. Today it might be diagnosed as spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal caused by calcification in the vertebrae. Eastman grew depressed, as he had seen his mother spend the last two years of her life in a wheelchair from the same condition.")

Poor George. Still those words are missing the word "here", so I kept looking…

FIFTH (maybe), I also came across many people saying it was Mary Poppins, but after reviewing the end of the movie several times, I heard no such words!

But I did get "Let's Go Fly A Kite" by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman (AKA the Sherman Brothers) stuck in my head.

…and this is why the projects in my house are never going to get done. Damn you Internet and your trial information goodness.

PS: I still don't know for sure who said it or wrote "my work here is done" first. If you do, let me know. In the mean time I'm going to see if I can get my hands on the original "Mary Poppins" books by P.L. Travers. There are about 8 of them, first one written in 1934. And I also want to see if I can get a full length copy of the Walt Disney film. Obsessed a little? Perhaps.

PPS: If I find the answer I'll let you know here!

PPPS: Procrastination is fun!

PPPPS: I want to get a kite now and fly it too! I've got tuppence!

PPPPPS: Here is the ending to the film where the song is sung:

Neil Patrick Harris – "Brand New Day" from "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" (2008)

2010/08/19

I am a fan of the Whedons. Joss Whedon (oh how I love "Firefly"?) and Jed Whedon (oh how much fun is "(Do You Wanna Date My) Avatar"?) are the composers of "Brand New Day", among others from "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog". It is an unusual sort of geeky, cheesy, musical, with a twist at the end that took some time to digest, but inevitably I have decided was the more bittersweet and took some balls. Well worth the 42 minutes in retrospect. This song in particular caught my ear because it reminds me of They Might Be Giants. Also who knew Neil Patrick Harris could sing? Huh.

The context of the song is hillarious.

Script leading up to the song…

Billy (Dr. Horrible): Well, this was great. Wish I could stay and chit-chat.

Captain Hammer: [places his arm around Billy] Well, it sure was nice to meet you… Doctor. [Billy winces] You've got a little crush don't you, Doc? Well, that's gonna make this hard to hear. See, later I'm gonna take little Penny back to my place. Show her the command center, Hammercycle, maybe even the Hamjet. You think she likes me now? I'm going to give Penny the night of her life, just because you want her. And I get what you want. You see, little Penny's giving it up, she's giving it up hard. 'Cause she's with Captain Hammer. [holds up his fists] And these are not the hammer. [walks away from Billy, but then returns] The hammer is my penis.

Or I guess you could just watch, if you're into that:

PS: One of the extras on the DVD is a bunch of fan made "Evil League of Evil Applications". The best one, by "Mr. Terrible", has a song worthy of a listen or two!

John Farrar (feat. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) – "You're the One That I Want" (from Grease) (1978)

2010/07/02

I swear my eyes opened and the immense song list in my head must've been stuck on shuffle because this song was playing though I haven't watched or seen Grease in years. I kind of want to now. Good summertime flick!

Charles Previn – "Lindy Hop (from Hellzapoppin')" (1941)

2009/10/08

I was looking for some sweet 1940s swing and I think this is the best I could find that both had the music and the dancing from the era. They are so good and fast and I bet they even did it over and over until they got one take right. It is from the film adaptation of the musical "Hellzapoppin'", which I had never heard of before this morning, but I am curious now.

Oh and Charles Previn was a stock music composer for Universal Pictures, so I am crediting him with writing the song. I could be wrong. I blame IMBD, if I am!

Meredith Willson – "Shipoopi (from The Music Man)" (1957)

2009/09/29

I've been watching way too much of The Family Guy, if that's possible. I've watched it so much this past year you could say I have been studying it. All the little musical references get stuck in my head too. This morning I cannot get "Shipoopi" from The Music Man out! (For the record I WANT IT OUT!) So here it is… Shipoopi! The 1962 movie version is above, the 1957 Broadway version is here, and The Family Guy version is below! It is so absurd a show tune, it is perfect for The Family Guy.

Album of the Week: Rodgers and Hammerstein – "The Sound of Music" Soundtrack (1965)

2009/09/06

Track 7: My Favorite Things:

After some deliberation, discussions with friends & family, meditation, singing, dancing, crying, drinking, tomfoolery, etc. … I think it is hard to argue with the evidence that "The Sound of Music" is the best musical of all time, and the 1965 movie in particular. Allow me to enumerate: the "boy" meets "girl" (and doesn't even know it) story is classic, it is set in historical pre-World War 2 Austria, the singing is top notch with Julie Andrews' voice, and the songs are all so good and solid that they stand on their own outside of the musical. Many of the songs I actually heard and knew before I watched it when I was young. "The Sound of Music" is also so pervasive and well known due to years of it being in the theaters and then shown on television during the holidays. G and I watched a brief segment of it on TV the other day too and we could've just sat and watched the whole thing.

Here are my 5 favorites from the soundtrack, with "My Favorite Things" being my favorite.
