Paul Cardall – "Time" (2001)

2010/12/06

Surprise! I have a fear of death. I think most people do. Most of us try not to think about it. It is better that way. You cannot stop the rain after all. In my dreams though, my subconscious likes to go to those dark places of the mind. It makes for some pretty crappy sleeping. For example…

I had a dream the other night. Death came to take me. I had been running, running running as hard as I could, running for my life… from what I don't know. I was tired and barely able to breath, and then I tripped. I fell hard on pavement. Unable to get myself up.

Then death came with his big black hooded cloak and all. As his bony fingers reached for my throat, he paused. Then he gestured with his index finger bones held straight, "one moment, I'll be back" and flew off to something more interesting. I awoke before I could turn to see what had distracted death. But I know… he'll be back to visit again. For now he has left me with time as my gift.

Uakti – "Dancça dos Meninos" (1992)

2010/09/08

I heard some Caribbean street music this weekend, but I don't really know much Caribbean music. It did make me think of this group Uakti from Brazil (not Carribbean, I know) who does some very interesting and lyrical percussion music. According to Wikipedia…

The name of the group comes from a Tukano native South American legend. Uakti was a mythological being who lived on the banks of the Rio Negro. His body was full of holes, which, when the wind passed through them, produced sounds that bewitched the women of the tribe. The men hunted down Uakti and killed him. Palm trees sprouted up in the place where his body was buried, and the people used these to make flutes that made enchanting sounds like those produced by the body of Uakti.

Creepy cool!

Eric Johnson – "Cliffs of Dover" (1990)

2010/08/31

Sometimes I think it would be awesome to have music playing all the time, where ever I go. Little speakers poking out of trees, furniture, mailboxes, etc. A soundtrack for my life. Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" song would have to be on there for the excellent melody and awesome guitar. I mean just check out some of his riffs in this live performance…

And then I think, thanks to my assorted musical devices and other people playing music (and the singing of the birds and assorted insects), I kind of have that already! Music is everywhere.

Enya – "Caribbean Blue" (1991)

2010/05/09

Today being mother's day, I'd like share one of my mom's all time favorites. My mom, being half Irish, was a fan of Enya, Clannad, and Celtic music in general. In an peculiar way Enya's music is part of my "heritage", along with being well versed in the ways of "Irish guilt". Heh. I'm a sucker for potatoes and Guinness too.

George Winston – "Joy" (1982)

2009/12/26

Audio Stream: http://www.rhapsody.com/player?type=undefined&id=tra.21243913

Today being the day after Christmas, there is that sort of joyous melancholy. It has been a lot of fun and very busy. I have eaten way too much, spent way too money much on presents, and had countless conversations with friends and family, all far more brief than I would've preferred.

Christmas songs and carols only hold their magic up to today I think. With Christmas now past, the anticipation wanes. As a transitional piece back to my regularly scheduled programming, I have selected George Winston's "Joy" which is based on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring". It has that joyous melancholy that embodies this time between Christmas and the New Year, and yet still has a touch of that Christmas flavor.
