Matthew Ebel – "Merry Christmas from Cell Block 2" (2009)

2010/12/16

I think this song is great! Loved it the first time I heard it. Matthew Ebel's sound and style is very Ben Folds-ish, in fact after I first heard this song, I was looking for it under Ben's name, and that is a complement. Maybe I like it partly because of the story and interjections from his robot, "Prodo", reminding me of John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album.

Fun!

Hopefully he won't mind that I directly streamed it off his site http://matthewebel.com/main/music/hohs/. AND I did not realize there was a whole album until I visited his site just now. I'm going to have to check out the rest now!

Keane – "Somewhere Only We Know" (2004)

2010/07/13

A little present for all of you… a bonus song.

Oh simple thing where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

Lily Allen – "Littlest Things" (2006)

2010/05/12

I am very much at the end of a relationship today as I leave my job. We have been through good times and bad. Over almost 7 years you build up a lot of history and baggage as well. Today I will try to leave that behind. It is a bittersweet moment for I will certainly miss many of the people I have worked with over the years and some of the people I have said good bye to I may never actually get to see again. Time will tell.

Lily Allen's "Littlest Things" was going around and around in head as I came to this morning after a night of reminiscing and drinking. It is perfect for the mood and the moment as I say good bye.

Gary Jules & Michael Andrews – "Mad World" (2001)

2010/01/18

I had a nightmare of sorts last night reminding me of this song, which many of you may know from the movie "Donnie Darko".

There was a valley with sand endlessly pouring into the abyss in the middle. The sky was clear but eerie for the sun hung at the end of the valley just high enough to light the valley. It seemed to be setting yet never seemed to get any closer. The end of the valley appeared so far away as to be invisibly abstracted by dust kicked up by the sand. I was under the impression I had died and my body & soul were stuck in the sand, helpless to ride it into the endless abyss. I seemed to ride it forever never actually getting closer to the abyss, yet it was inevitable. It seemed almost fun for a moment until it grated my skin and bits of me appeared to wear away as they were sand blasted by the flow. Occasionally I would pass someone or something I had known in my life, but any attempt to reach them, to touch them, ultimately failed. I was moving too fast. As I passed each I knew it was the last glimpse I would have of each. By the end there there was only anguish.

I awoke well before I reached the bottom, if there even was one. Perhaps I would've disintegrated before I reached the abyss. My heart was pounding and muscles were tense. I was unable to simply return to sleep. It was very vivid and upsetting at the time, but such are nightmares. I miss the days when I slept soundly night after night, not a care in the world. It was not the first and likely will not be the last.

By the way, this song is a cover. The original was by "Tears for Fears". This is a rare case where I think the cover improves upon the original. It captures the sorrow of the song better.

Tori Amos – "Talula (The Tornado Mix)" (1996)

I had a nightmare last night. I've had worse, but still it woke me up so it qualifies.

I was at work and yet interviewing for a new job. It was not my actual employer or job, but elsewhere. You know how dreams are. They wanted me to transfer into some sort of weird technical-marketing role and I was asking why. We were in an office that was all windows, floor to ceiling. As we were talking I could see out the window the sky quickly darkening, and then several tornados worming across the sky and clearly moving closer. In the distance a building of some sort was hit and picked up what appeared to be wheel hubs of all sorts for cars, motorcycles and even bicycles and the storm was spitting them out at all directions, some hitting the building and breaking windows. The first broken window set the office into chaos as people scurried to find a safe place, but there was none to be found. All the rooms had floor to ceiling windows. People were screaming and I ran from room to room in search of safety as window after window broke. The tornados were right outside now. As the building started to rip apart and I could feel the debris ripping at my skin, I awoke.

I usually do not remember my dreams, but when I am ripped awake they are quite memorable. So I mostly only remember the bad ones. To see a tornado in your dream "signifies that you are feeling overwhelmed and out of control". That may be. I just got done with a marathon two weeks of vacation with family. It is fun and great to see everyone. I love them all, and I always have a great time, and yet it is overwhelming. G and I are use to only the two of us, not the 12+ of us. I usually leave at least a few days at the end of my vacation to have a "vacation from the vacation" where I mostly veg around the house. Yesterday (Saturday) though I had to work over the course of 12 hours to assist with an upgrade of a system at work. I was so tense after sitting in front of computers in "tense upgrade mode" I had to immediately take a walk around the block and take a shower. Blech! I suppose I should've been surprised if I didn't have a nightmare. Tomorrow I get to go back to work too. Good times.

Anyway thinking of tornadoes always makes me think of this song.

Also, for the record, "Boys For Pele" was released with an earlier version of "Talula" (a non-"The Tornado Mix" version). I bought the album when it first was released and G did after the re-release (this was before we combined our collections), so we have both versions. I think both are excellent and any big Tori fans should hunt down the original version. You'd think the single would have both, but no, you would be wrong. I tried to find a video or audio stream online though and so far I could not find it. So good luck!

Album of the Week: Coldplay – "X&Y" (2005)

2009/07/12

Track 7: Speed of Sound:

Coldplay has become a staple in my listening rotation, and this album in particular. The album is solid, so solid I rarely skip any songs and it was difficult to pick out 5 favorites. It may be that many of the songs are similar in tone and many feature a slower start and rise to a climax. It is hardly the most creative album musically or lyrically, and Coldplay is hardly the most creative band I ever heard, but it is a sound I like, a lot. It is a sound I can listen to over and over without tiring. Ethereal and yet active, and always familiar and comforting.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Speed of Sound" being my favorite.

Keane – "Leaving So Soon?" (2006)

2009/06/27

Work has made me super late in all my plans for the day. It is 5 PM, and I'm doing things I thought I'd would've started at 11 AM. Things like this post…

Although I have been mostly careful not to post songs by the same artists over and over, I kind of have two playlists in my life. One is my song of the day and bonus song that I've been posted as matches what is stuck in my head or fills my fancy at the time. The other are the "new to me" songs that I play over and over. There always seems to be one. These new to me songs give me chills (in a good way), but only for so long. Then it usually isn't long until another song takes its place.

I would post them all as "my song of the day", but my fear is it would make it quite dull, to hear about the same artists over and over for a week and then never again for months. I might just have to create a new category or something?

For today though I am going to cave to my desires, and post the song I am obsessing over by Keane even though I have recently posted a song by Keane. I think it might be the fun drum part that lures me, but I do like to belt out the lyrics in the car. (Yes I sing in the car, doesn't everybody?)

PS: The album cover for Keane's – "Under the Iron Sea" (2006) is surprisingly similar to The Sounds' – "Crossing the Rubicon" (2009) cover, don't you think? Hmmm. (Listen to "The Sounds" here!)
