Instead of sleeping I am wide awake. G is ok. I am ok. Those in the other car are ok. That's all that really matters.
I sit here weeping for what might have been, and what may be one day. My car is not ok and I am sad that she is gone so soon. I acquired her not long ago and the damage is severe, but that is far from my mind now.
I have replayed the scene a number of times. The other driver pulled out in front of us, I slammed the brakes, there was just not nearly enough time to stop. All my thought and energy were on pushing that brake pedal. My leg muscle still aches from the effort. The impact was like snapping your fingers… the flap of a bird's wings… the blink of an eye. Air bags deployed, as we came to a gruelling sudden halt. The sounds of screeching, grinding metal, and small explosions fresh in my ears. I glanced over at G and saw the windshield in front of her was smashed. I had an intense moment of fear for the worst, and then was relieved when I saw she appeared ok. I checked myself and though I felt as though I had been punched in the face, I was otherwise unscathed.
The burning smell in the car set me off thinking we needed to vacate the car. The driver and passenger of the other car were already out of the vehicle to check on us, as I pryed my door open and then G's to get us out of the car. With everyone being "ok" with no need for medical attention, and no sign of things getting any worse than they were, "the usual stuff" happened: call to the authorities, call to the nearest relatives for a ride, waiting for the tow trucks.
I have written of the end a few times before. Those thoughts of death swim in my mind at this late hour like a bitter distasteful soup I am forced to eat. I am happy G and I are alive and well. It could be so much worse. Relieved is not a large enough word to convey the feeling. However I have been shaken to the core.
