You've heard "The xx" by now. But have you heard their whole "xx" album? If not, go. Now. Do it. Report back to me.

Freaky! Love it!

I had a busy weekend, so I am playing catch up.
I am going to use this opportunity to post the story of Jenny's murder from the point of view of her murderer. This fictitious tale gives their name, "The Killers", that nice double entendre too.
1. Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf off of the album/b-side collection Sawdust
2. Midnight Show off of their album Hot Fuss
3. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine also off of their album Hot Fuss
Here is part 3, Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, where the murderer is being questioned by the police, and recounting scenes from during the murder in a way to claim his innocence.
Also, this is the opening song on their first album. They've gone a bit "softer" since then, but it was a nice introduction to The Killers. I tell people, "start with Hot Fuss" if you haven't heard The Killers.

Here is part 1, Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf, where Jenny breaks up with him, and he turns to the bourbon with a smile. It is unclear how together they truly were, but clearly he isn't going to let her go so easily.

Those of you who didn't go to The Temper Trap's concert at Rochester's Water Street Music Hall on Wednesday 10/6 truly missed out (which is most of you). The venue was hardly full, much to my dismay, but the crowd was enthusiastic! Hooting and hollering, and of course dancing!
The Temper Trap delivered an excellent performance, playing just about all, if not all of their first album. Many songs seemed improved from their album version, including "Drum Song" which is a sort of closing song at the end of the album. They played a lengthened version that proved to be a hit with the audience.
I did truly enjoy their performance of "Love Lost", with the intense pause of silence part way through the song made all the more so intense by the live performance. You can get a sense for it here:
Also lead singer Dougy Mandagi's performance was more soulful than I anticipated, adding a musical flavor less common in the common post-punk and alternative rock band. Overall I would highly recommend you see The Temper Trap if given the opportunity (keep in mind they are here from Australia)! I would happily go again myself. You should at least get the album!!!

I know for some people birthdays are exciting. Ever since (and including) when I turned 21, they've been a downer for me. Perhaps it is because my 21st was so pitiful. Now I'd rather just let them pass quietly. I'd probably stop celebrating my own at all if I could, but others seem to insist on marking the day. At least there are some presents and cake to sweeten the deal, and G did her best to ensure it was okay and not totally sucky. It kind of makes me laugh when people say "Happy Birthday", as if just saying the words would make it true.
Today is not my birthday though. It recently passed, though it is probably easy to guess. Chock full of descending minor chords, and with visions of a funeral like scene, the tone of this song is close to the tone I tend to feel on my birthday. Perhaps I'm just a birthday wet blanket at this point, but hopefully just for my own though. I'm glad it is a happy day for most people. It should be a day of celebrating being alive!
Show me the dirt pile
And I will pray that the soul can take
Three stowaways
In a passion it broke
I pull the black from the grey
But the soul can wait
I felt you so much today…
PS: Interpol recently came to town and I could've gone, but no one I asked was even a little interested in joining me. Shame on all of you! And shame on me for not just going on my own!
