The Stranglers – "Waltzinblack" (1981)

2010/10/24

"Waltzinblack" is not typical of The Stranglers' work, and is more of an quirky intro to the album. I totally dig it as a creepy waltz, and whoever created the video slideshow above is right to think of clowns and carnivals as the setting for this dark dance. I watched Stephen King's "IT" when I was a bit young for it. Clowns are creepy!

Gossip – "Listen Up" (2006)

2010/07/03

listen up the weekend is here
doesn't matter whether you dance
or sit back and open a beer
good times for you given the chance

…oh and those aren't song lyrics, just a little poem I wrote to celebrate the long weekend! The bass in this song rocks, doesn't it?

Peter Murphy – "I'll Fall with Your Knife" (1995)

2010/06/21

I LOVE this song. It is an epic ballad of love and devotion. I hadn't heard it in years and years, and then it was on the radio randomly and it almost brought a tear to my eye.

Well if the birds
can reach the sky
to this land
I'll be with you
till the sun bursts from your side
with my hands
I'll reach to you
when you think your chance is passing by
when you blow your moon away
I'll bleed like the reed
fall with your knife
it's here I'll be with you

New Order – "True Faith" (1987)

2010/05/27

A favorite from New Order…

I feel so extraordinary
Something's got a hold on me
I get this feeling I'm in motion
A sudden sense of liberty

….

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear

Billy Idol – "Dancing With Myself" (1981)

2010/04/30

It has been a good week. My mind just feels like dancing, and it is Friday to boot!

PS: Although originally released in 1981 by the band Billy Idol was a part of before going solo, Generation X, Billy Idol's solo and slightly more pop version/cover made this song a hit.

Joy Division – "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (1980)

2010/03/31

I hear this song everywhere. It comes up a lot. I'm sure the drama of singer Ian Curtis's suicide shortly after the release propelled it some. I'd like to think that it also fueled the fire for the rest of them to carry on as New Order. A classic in my book and yet I discovered The Illustrious G was really not familiar with it. Shocking!

As a fan of the mashup, I must also provide you a link to Dsico's "Love Will Freak Us", a combination of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" with Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On". Mashups are all the more fun when you know both songs of course, so here is a link to "Get Ur Freak On".
