Flogging Molly – "The Worst Day Since Yesterday" (2000)

2010/09/15

The honeymoon on my new job is over. I realized yesterday that I am going to be beholden to commitments made years ago by my predecessors. This is not good. I don't even know what those commitments are. So as I explained to my manager, we are screwed because my predecessors made some awful commitments (e.g. build an entire 40 page, database driven website, from scratch, in just 40 hours! …with "the customer" providing feedback the whole time on changes and updates, and demanding support for the site for the next 3 years… thus making it more like 160 hours at least.) No wonder my predecessors left! If I dug a big hole, and took a dump in it, I'd leave too instead of climbing in!

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence… until it isn't. So this morning I head in early. A drop of blood to be shed to make amends with the issue at hand, though much like my last job, I am all primed and greased up to fail. I just didn't know it yet!

Dead Kennedys – "Holiday in Cambodia" (1980)

2010/07/29

I like to canoe. It is a calm, peaceful, solitary, and beautiful activity. There is an art to it akin to the artful gliding of birds who are flying for the sake of flying, using the wind to soar and seemingly hang in the air.

I went canoeing and have returned to visit with my family as our holiday continues on. Despite trying to take a moment to write this, the peace I had only moments ago has evaporated. Hopefully it will not morph into another kind of holiday, yet I am reminded of this song in particular.

So goes the family vacation… moments of extreme relaxation sprinkled among other moments where you just want to pull out your hair!

Beastie Boys – "Sabotage" (1994)

2010/07/26

Nevermind what I said yesterday. Something in me has certainly changed though. Perhaps for the better? Making other people happy just doesn't seem to have the same appeal it once did. It kind of just makes me mad. Nor am I content spending hour after hour doing a single thing. I get anxious. I'm wondering if I am more like a 5 year old now, than when I was 5 years old.

PS: I'm surrounded by family and at times they are driving me crazy. I'm sure you all understand what I am talking about!

Whatever. Time for some sabotage.

Billy Idol – "Dancing With Myself" (1981)

2010/04/30

It has been a good week. My mind just feels like dancing, and it is Friday to boot!

PS: Although originally released in 1981 by the band Billy Idol was a part of before going solo, Generation X, Billy Idol's solo and slightly more pop version/cover made this song a hit.

L7 – "Pretend We're Dead" (1992)

2010/02/28

After a late night of RockBand and hanging with some friends, I have another highly influenced choice, "Pretend We're Dead", which I haven't heard in years and years. L7 wasn't as popular as some other grunge bands in the 90s (e.g. Pearl Jam, Nirvana), but they may be the most successful and famous female grunge band ever. I cannot even think of another that was all women. If I were a woman I would totally want to be in an all girl band. Alas.

Speaking of bands, the "band" I am in finally got together. We played along with a couple dozen songs, had a good time, and achieved little else. We didn't play this song by L7, but I think Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" and The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man" went well! It was great!

We were joking at one point about naming the band Maggot Head. (Really it wouldn't work unless we punked up a bit.) Sadly even our joking band names appear to be taken! See!

Green Day – "Basket Case" (1993)

2010/01/31

Well I'm not stoned. Despite my tendency toward slow speech, I am neither high nor from the south. The alternative, according to the opening, is far more likely. I am certainly feeling like I can't do anything right. Or perhaps I cannot do anything better? I am not smarter than I am, faster than I am, better than I am. It is a bit paralyzing. Yeah, I'm going with paranoid.

Go do something else. You've spent enough time listening to me whine.

Blondie – "One Way or Another" (1978)

2010/01/17

I realized yesterday I have yet to post any Blondie songs. I love Blondie and I appear to be on a late 70's, early 80's kick this weekend. Compared to most bands that were big in the 1980's, the legacy left by Blondie has been more successful than most. Though usually considered New Wave or Punk Rock, they touched other genres and their songs continue to get a fair amount of air time, at least on the radio stations I listen to. One way or another, you'll listen to Blondie soon.
