Barenaked Ladies (feat. Sarah McLachlan) – "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings" (1997)

2009/12/12

This combo song of the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan singing the carols "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "We Three Kings" intertwined is one of my all time favorite Christmas songs. It is so clever and the contrast between the songs and the artists oddly works and makes what I think is a better whole. This song is a must for the season.

Sarah McLachlan – "Possession" (1993)

There is an unforgiving honesty to Sarah McLachlan that I really appreciate. She exposes emotions, capturing every shade of melancholy and sorrow with her beautiful voice and without sounding fake or contrived. If I am Tyler Durden, then I think Sarah McLachlan might be my "Bob" (musically of course). Glean from that what you will.

By the way, I was thinking of the acoustic version for today's song of the day but have posted that and the original version because they are the same song and yet not at all. I believe they are both worth your time and your ears though.
