Sometimes I curse the life I'm living, and I curse my poverty.

But then I remember the poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson and the song that goes with it by Simon and Garfunkel. I remember going over it in class in junior high school. I was reminded again of this after a friend today said "What you do for a living does not define who you are."

So true.

We are not our jobs or the money we make. We are not our 401k. We are not the things we buy or the place we live. (Now I feel like I am referencing Fight Club.) If anything it is vice versa. All of those things are an expression of who we are if we are lucky enough to have a choice. Frequently though they indicate misplaced focus on things that don't even matter that much to the people who have them. Having money, status, or power will not grant you everlasting happiness. (Having no money may make it more difficult to be happy, but that is a basic needs issue).

We must live happy moment to happy moment. That is the real currency we should all be focused on. Don't be Richard Cory, and don't think you want to be him either!
