Angus & Julia Stone – "Big Jet Plane" (2010)

2010/10/05

Could this be my new most favorite band I only *just* heard for the first time. Yes it could. Yes… it… could. I've listened to three songs, once each, and liked all three. A good omen.

José González – "Down the Line" (2007)

2010/10/02

José González's songs are so beautiful. You've probably heard him somewhere before if you do not recognize the name. Aside from his collaborations as part of the groups Zero 7 and Junip, he has put out his own albums, done a number of awesome covers, and has had several songs featured in a variety of show and movies. He is famous and yet if I said José González, would you know who I am referring to? Maybe you will now, if you didn't before.

Here is his cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats" (The Knife, by the way consists of the duo Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson, Karin Dreijer Andersson AKA Fever Ray yesterday's selection… but I'm sure some of you are musical smarty-pants and already knew that, the other half of you still don't care!):

Leona Naess – "Calling" (2003)

2010/08/11

(Click here to skip the stuff added to the beginning of the song in the video.)

G keeps playing this song and it is good like a good chick flick, or like the Gilmore Girls (as shown in the above video). You tough guys out there might prefer yesterday's song of the day.

Aimee Mann – "Red Vines" (2001)

2010/05/29

My apathy is strong today. With the heat and G out and about, I have slept poorly. So I'll be on the sidelines watching the show, but probably with beer and Twizzlers instead of cigarettes and Red Vines.

I don't suppose you'd give it a shot
Knowing all that you've got
Are cigarettes and red vines
Just close your eyes, 'cause, baby–
You never do know
And I'll be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show

Dar Williams – "The Christians And The Pagans" (1996)

2009/12/21

I was up late at a winter solstice party and on the way home I heard this song on the radio. I think perhaps I am more Wiccan than not when I hear this line…

And you find magic from your God,
and we find magic everywhere

I've seen Dar Williams multiple times in concert. She was so nonchalant and quirky and fun. I don't go anymore though. It is too bad about that last time I went to see her and ended up getting sucker punched, but that is a story for another time.

Kerri Powers – "Tallulah Send a Car for Me" (2009)

2009/10/02

This is good stuff from Kerri Powers. Good stuff you need to hear!

On a totally unrelated post, my friend posted this song in the comments. I didn't have a chance to listen to it until this morning, but now I've listened to most of Kerri Power's album. I am intrigued.

I think it is tough for folk artists to make it big. They tend to get ignored by the industry and most of the public. So many of them are just one man shows, song and guitar. They have a lot of competition just in folk alone, with minimal support or visibility. Also the nature of the music is such that it is not going to knock your socks off, yet it is just what most of us need at the end of a long day.

I don't know how we get artists like Kerri out of the shadows, but listen to "Tallulah Send a Car for Me" (and then perhaps more of Kerri's songs here), and perhaps we can all do it together. I also suggest "Do You Hear Footsteps" and "Trying To Make My Way To You". Regardless, at least she has faith in the shadows.

Joseph Arthur – "In The Sun" (2000)

2009/08/24

Thanks to my friend LK, I was reminded of Joseph Arthur. I like this song of his in particular, though I have only heard a few of his songs from his many albums. I remember this one from the movie Saved!
