Sting – "All This Time" (1991)

I love Sting's album "The Soul Cages". It is largely overlooked though for his later, more popular solo works. Pity.

Such a sappy song for sappy people who get songs stuck in their heads.

Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush – "Don't Give Up" (1986)

2010/12/08

Sometimes… sometimes you just need to listen to this song to find the strength to push on…

In this proud land we grew up strong
We were wanted all along
I was taught to fight, taught to win
I never thought I could fail

No fight left or so it seems
I am a man whose dreams have all deserted
I've changed my face, I've changed my name
But no one wants you when you lose

Don't give up
'cos you have friends
Don't give up
You're not beaten yet
Don't give up
I know you can make it good

Extreme – "More Than Words" (1990)

2010/11/10

This is one of THOSE songs. The type of song that when it came out, was played 5,000,000 times a day. You could not run, you could not hide, you could not escape. It cut you deep, and at the time you wished to never hear it again.

Now it is more like an old battle scar. Sure the war was rough, but the wounds have healed and the song is endearing now, and here I am to show it off. "Remember this one!? Sure I wanted to stick Q-tips in my ears until they bled when I heard it back in the day, but now it is a fine wine, aged to perfection." … er something like that.

Then again it has been stuck in my head for like a weak, and my scar is starting to itch.

It is funny really, because Extreme's music was typically of the funk metal, glam metal, hard rock variety. Yet here was this folk rock acoustic ballad that just blew away all their other successes and ensured them endless airtime and mention on the soft rock radio stations and lists. And also here is the song of theirs that really gets under my skin, allowing me to fully understand a "love-hate relationship".

Ooo I love it. Ooo I hate it. Ooo I love it again.

PS: I am serious about Extreme not being anything like this song. e.g. Off the same album as "More Than Words", here is "Get The Funk Out"…

… and "Decadence Dance"…

In retrospect, what a gutsy move! It could've flopped horribly and ruined their image, but instead the album went double platinum (over 2 million sold) and ruined their image. Nah. It's cool. They are rock jelly donuts. Powdery glam rock exterior. Gooey soft rock core hidden in the middle. Mmmm.

Later! I need to get the funk out of here! (Heh heh… he said 'funk'… heh… sorry reverted to 12 years old for a moment there….)

Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes – "Up Where We Belong" (1982)

After listening to it because of my previous post, I just had to pick this one! And like it or not… I know you know the words to the chorus! (It is ok if you close the windows of your car and belt it out. I'll understand. ;)

Cher – "If I Could Turn Back Time" (1989)

2010/08/01

So G has been playing these trivia games on sporcle.com and now I am hooked. Be warned. If you should click the link you will suddenly discover 2 hours have passed and although you had a good time, you remember very little of it and have nothing to show for it.

I did find one for "Can you name the one named musicians listed below?" and I must say I was disappointed in myself for only getting half of them, 14 of the 28. This song was on the list and I decided to bring up the video, which reminds me of a time when Cher was still considered hot, and yet was ridiculous, but not ridiculous that people actively disliked her music. How prescient of her to write a song named "If I Could Turn Back Time", right? Now if only I could turn back the past 2 hours and get them back as well!
