The latest early 60s sound, only it was released this year! Groovy! Heard it on the radio last night and totally loved it. I had to share!

War – "Low Rider" (1975)

2010/02/07

The other day I actually got a ticket from a county sheriff for having a crappy car. Awesome, right? Her muffler fixed, I was able to get the ticket dropped, but I think my relationship with my car may need to come to an end.

I love my car but she is old. 14 years old, and I've had her for 10. She has served me well, but lately I have to have something non-trivial fixed on her at least every 3 to 6 months, and now she is getting me in trouble with the law! She works now, but tomorrow who knows what will be next to break.

I've been looking at alternatives, and I found a little number not unlike a car I wanted to buy 10 years ago but could not afford at the time. The car I'm thinking about is a Ford Focus 2007 ZX5 SES Hatchback … Black:

I found one in the area and tested it out the other day. I going to go see it in the daylight and if it is looking good, I'll pull the trigger to buy it. My new "low rider". The hatchback will be handy if I want to move something like a dog, a set of drums, or who knows around town. Neither my current car nor G's, which is a 2006 Ford Focus and has proven to be a great car for the cost, is exactly a good car for moving anything around. The SUVs and crossovers out there are way to much money though. Most people out there are a little bit insane for spending so much on cars, and then the gas to run those cars. Oh and then there is the the environmental impact. You're being selfish people. Tsk tsk.

I like a small car too. They fit in parking spaces (and more importantly my itty bitty garage). They don't handle like a boat. Parts are cheaper to replace. I do like that they feel like "low riders" now given how high up all the other vehicles are these days. I suppose they are less safe in some ways, but only because they have to share the road with vehicles like the Hummer.

The money to buy a new car (and by new I mean used of course… I don't believe in buying brand new cars), is a bit scary. I currently enjoy minimal debt. I haven't had a car payment in 8 years. Then again, I do have the saddest looking car of anyone I know. Hmmm. I'll keep you all posted on my decision, but for now I'll be humming a little "Low Rider" as I mull it all over.

The Temptations – "Get Ready" (1966)

2010/01/28

I can't decide. Do I like the original classic by The Temptations more than Fergie's "Here I Come"? I guess it depends on the party but I have to hand it to The Temptations!

Commodores – "Brick House" (1977)

2009/11/19

I am feeling a little funky tonight. I have made the decision to put some hard dollars behind my blog. New hosting. New domain. That's right… I'll be moving and unlike the rental space I'm in now, I have more control over my new space. I can paint it red if I want. Hmmmm.

I knew this day may come, and I feel alright. Gigidy gigidy. Wordpress and my wee blog msotd.wordpress.com has served me well, but I require more freedom, and now I have it. I just need to pack up my stuff and move. Perhaps this weekend?

I'd tell you the new domain, but the paperwork hasn't cleared yet and I don't want to jinx it. Short domains can be hard to come by. msotd.com and sotd.com were taken, but I got my third choice. More to come later. Until then, stay cool. Stay cool.

Billy Ocean – "Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)" (1984)

2009/11/15

Heh heh… I told people I'd post this song. In fact I threatened them. It is all my friends' fault for singing it over an over last night. So as punishment, I present it to all of you now. It is one of those songs you know all the words to (if you listened to the radio at all in the 80s), but you question if you want to.

Honestly, though I kind of like it now and I do wonder why. It has that familiarity that makes it attractive now, but otherwise I probably would not like it at all. It is kind of like an old acquaintance from high school who you probably didn't really like all that much in school, but now running into them is kind of nice because you can both talk about the old days. Perhaps now I will like it because I will forever remember my friends singing it poorly over and over? Although I could fill this space with one of countless songs I like more, it is payback time. I need to stick to my word too! Sing on Billy!

Gil Scott-Heron – "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" (1971)

2009/11/03

Today is Election Day here in the USA and I don't know about everyone else, but I am sick of politics, politicians, and elections in general. I think it is time for a constitutional convention at the county level, the state level, and the national level. Common sense has apparently "left the building" and the change we are promised year after year is insufficient or in the wrong directions. It is unacceptable and I vote we tell them all that they are all fired and we start over!

Outlaw the political parties. Remove the power of corporations, lobbyists, and the American plutocracy, and give that power back to the people. It is all about "We the People" after all. Change the focus from getting rich to the pursuit of happiness and quality of life. Make sustainability a priority. We need big change but our leaders are too chicken-shit to do more than twist a couple knobs on a broken system. They are weak.

Time for big change. Real change. …Time for a revolution. Turn off your TV too because…

The revolution will not be televised.

Bill Withers – "Lean on Me" (1972)

2009/10/10

I went to my yoga class this morning, and I finally think I felt my mind and body were quiet and I did not need to struggle to keep them quiet. So frequently I have been unable to stop the flurry of things I should be doing, concerns, hopes, and fears from flying through my thoughts even when in "Tadasana" in the stillness of a morning yoga class. Today it was no issue. All was quiet.

On the way home I was thinking about how I use to just do yoga at home and it was good, but never quite as satisfying. I use to resist the assistance of others, in yoga and in most things, but I have accepted that sometimes I need help to get where I want to go. My yoga class is just one example. I started humming this classic, "Lean on Me" as I walked home. If we all lean on each other, then we become a forest, right?

(OMG, yoga… Tadasana… forests… perhaps I am a hippie… an intellectual hippie though. Oh and I shower daily, so there!)
