Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – "100 Days, 100 Nights" (2007)

2010/08/20

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: The perfect remedy when looking for some new stuff that feels like the old stuff. Brilliantly they limit themselves to sound equipment, recording methods, and even instruments that would've been available in the 1970s. The latest gadgets are totally overrated.

Amy Winehouse – "You Know I'm No Good" (2006)

2010/08/16

I've only just begun to watch "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" and the song playing at the menu has intoxicated me, while at the same time I let it sit on repeat enough times that G started to go crazy-like. So I am posting it here for all to hear!

Also I think the whole drug abuse and going crazy thing for Amy Winehouse was way overblown. I mean half the successful artists out there have had their addictions and "early morning hours, barefoot and wearing only a bra and jeans" moments. I think such moments speak to their humanity, or so says the guy who married a girl who was wearing pajamas at the time. (Me.)

Erykah Badu – "Honey" (2007)

2010/08/04

I'm certainly lacking in my Rhythm and Blues collection. I know I like some of Erykah Badu's stuff, including this song in particular, but I am open to suggestions if anyone has any to broaden my horizon. There is certainly much I have never heard, but then again I suppose that is true across all genres. I have a day job to keep, you know!

Etta James – "At Last" (1961)

2010/06/20

I dedicate this song to G. As G might say, Etta James is "romantical". "A Sunday Kind of Love" (which was the song of the day a year ago) is kinda-sorta "our song", but "At Last" is a runner up for sure.

Why today? Today is our wedding anniversary. We had decided on the Summer Solstice to be the day, so June 20th it is, when the day is longest, the trees are flush with new leaves, the oppressive heat of summer has yet to come (usually), and if we're lucky the fire flies are just making their first appearances and the black raspberries are just ready to be picked. (June is one of my favorite months of the year).

The funny thing about our anniversary this year is I am not sure if G realizes it is today. I know she knows it is coming soon, but she keeps referring to me going off to do Father's Day things with my family, on my own. I wanted to surprise her with dinner plans, presents, etc. so I played along. I don't know if she is just playing dumb and seeing if I will forget OR maybe she has secret plans OR maybe she has actually forgotten herself, even though a week ago we both stood in the kitchen and remarked that Father's Day falls on our anniversary. I guess I'll find out later!

Right now I'm going to sneak out to get her favorite breakfast, which many would probably find disgusting, the "McGriddle" from McDonalds. Whenever she eats, she likes to mix all the flavors on her plate together so she can experience the whole meal in a single bite. The McGriddle is the same idea but in a hand held breakfast sandwich form. She is too funny!

Rick James – "Super Freak" (1981)

2010/06/12

I'd like it if my selections always matched my mood, but sometimes they are completely the opposite, or completely random. Frequently they are a song stuck in my head too. There is no rhyme or reason to it all. I'll say this though. My blog. My choice. Though I do accept suggestions!

Today's choice is highly influenced by a viewing of some Chappelle show skits last night, thanks to some friends of mine. It is well worth the watch for all you "Super Freak" fans!

Chappelle's Show's Rick James Sketch with Charlie Murphy – Part 1:

Part 2:

Just remember… "I'm Rick James, bitch." and "Cocaine's a hell of a drug." ;)

King Floyd – "Groove Me" (1970)

2010/05/11

Today being my last full day of work at my current job (tomorrow being my actual last day), I am a bit saddened deep down. I know I will miss people and I have to say good bye to many today. But I can miss them next week. I'm trying to ignore that for now and just celebrate! I thought some of King Floyd's line "Aw sookie sookie now!" might keep up the funk!

Kool & the Gang – "Jungle Boogie" (1973)

2010/05/10

I have just a couple more days at my current employer, and then a few days off for a much needed vacation. It is no wonder this song is stuck in my head this morning. A little funk while I exit the building seems just about right.
