I may have inadvertently overlooked Muse's album "The Resistance" for my "Top 10 Best Albums of 2009". This song, "Uprising", in particular has caught my attention. I must point out that when I hear the opening to this song all I can think about is Dr. Who's opening song.
For the most part, I find Modest Mouse annoying. It is rough because people keep recommending them to me, and they do fall under the "Indie Rock" genre I love so much. I am also such a music slut that I rarely hear music I actively dislike. I think it might be the voice of Isaac Brock. Or perhaps not his voice, but the his singing style.
I say this and yet I love this song. I heard it a dozen times before even recognizing it as Modest Mouse. Perhaps I just like Modest Mouse when they are least like themselves? Perhaps I should give them another chance?
I had a similar experience with Dave Matthews Band. I couldn't stand them at first, but over time they have become more palatable.
I was sold on this song the moment I heard the keyboards in the beginning of the song. I was actually unaware of Muse until their album "Black Holes and Revelations" came out and I listened to it over and over and over. Clearly I was missing out. I love the variety in their songs, the thickness, the rise to climax, the emotion… At points they remind me of U2 too (I'm a die hard U2 fan so it only makes me like them more.)
Also these guys did what we all want to do but don't have the guts to. They dropped out of college and quit their jobs to focus on the band. Four albums later they play in stadiums and their music is in soundtracks. Excuse me while I go practice.
