Eric Prydz – "Call on Me" (2004)

2010/10/09

I watched a whole bunch of banned videos last night, the kind banned from youtube or MTV for example. Although some are banned for violence (e.g. M.I.A's "Born Free"), most are banned for being too sexually provocative.

I am a totally in favor of the freedom of speech, so anything that is banned, should get extra air time in my opinion! I am even thinking about doing a series of banned songs and videos. They touch on the boundaries of our social dialogue and just because something is uncomfortable to some people doesn't mean that something should be banned, deleted, outlawed or burned. (Yes… I am reading "Fahrenheit 451", so I am a little extra motivated on the "Freedom of Speech" at the moment.) You might not like the dialogue, but banning is the first step toward outlawing, and that cannot be tolerated. There are important discussions to be had! For example, I do wonder where is the line between one hip thrust and porn? I think the video for Eric Prydz's "Call on Me" explores that question.

So sit back, relax, enjoy the show! …and please do keep your hand out of your pants!

PS: I found a couple of references to this video being banned by BBC. But I could not find hard evidence (pardon the pun). I'm sure it was though, and I'm betting it is only played on MTV late at night. (Oh right… MTV isn't about the music anymore and hasn't been for about 20 years… I forgot.) I did find a lot of references to ex-UK Prime Minister Tony Blair saying "The first time it came on, I nearly fell off my rowing machine." Awesome.

Kleerup (feat. Lykke Li) – "Until We Bleed" (2008)

I know you're all probably sick of my over emphasis on Electropop and Synthpop by now but I just cannot help myself. It is my New Wave roots! Here is one I keep hearing on the radio.

Paul Oakenfold – "Starry Eyed Surprise" (2002)

2009/09/30

I have "Starry Eyed Surprise" on my iPod for when I go for a run and it never fails to boost my run. Whoa to the song that follows it. I like the dreamy synths in the background trough out it too.

This song is not a good representation of the whole of Paul Oakenfold's work. He is not usually so "pop" influenced, but it is fun and light with a good beat. He is usually more techno and trance centric. Oakenfold is the DJ in the video, by the way.

Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek, & Reinhold Heil – "Running Three (from Run Lola Run)" (1998)

2009/08/03

I feel like running this morning, and I though of my old favorite, the Run Lola Run (AKA Lola rennt) soundtrack. I loved the movie and the soundtrack and use to watch and listen over and over. "Running Three" is probably my favorite being a little less dark than some of the others …a little more hopeful too. It has the sense of urgency in songs and the movie, that adrenaline rush, which can be addicting. The idea of actually running to save the ones you love is powerful as well.

Alas I am running late so actual running will have to wait.

Saint Etienne – "Shower Scene" (2002)

Feeling good. Perhaps like dancing with a little Zen like state of mind. (I just got out of yoga class.) Somehow this song seems just right.

Golden Boy with Miss Kittin – "Rippin Kittin (Glove Radiomix)" (2002)

2009/05/04

After I wrote about DJ Earworm's – "The Night of Kittin's Messy Dream", I decided to check out the album "Or" by Golden Boy and Miss Kittin. I would have to say this remixed song is the best song on there. Some of the album is skip-able, but this song is enticing in the same sort of sick twisted way Greenskeepers' – "Lotion" is. The video is kind of funny too because she is a creepy at times, and then she is dancing on the edge of buildings and railways and she is totally not creepy. Almost funny. I guess that's a lesson for us all: just because the little girl is dancing doesn't mean she's not going to kill you for pleasure. So watch out!
