The Beautiful South – "You Keep It All In" (1989)

2009/04/15

I had several songs from The Beautiful South's first album in my head this morning. This was one of them.

I think they have a nice combination of catchy tunes with funny, and sometimes dark and twisty lyrics and themes. This song is a perfect example. Now you have to understand this album was the 3rd album I ever bought (yes I remember) and in my early teen years I thought it was a laugh riot. The Beautiful South is still near and dear to my heart and over the years I have been disappointed they never developed a substantial following in America, though I did get to see them in concert once back in the '90s.

I know the "You Keep It All In" video is a bit goofy, and perhaps "not good", but don't let that detract from the song. In general I think videos are an addendum to the song, not the primary focus, and thus you should not let your opinion be swayed too much either way by the video (especially if the video sucks but the song is awesome).

One last thought on The Beautiful South in case the "knife you in the heart" lyrics are not to your liking… Not all The Beautiful South's songs are a "happy version of sick". Some of their songs are some of the sweetest and saddest songs I know. e.g. "Diamonds". Definitely a band to explore if this little taste intrigues you. I'd suggest starting with the earlier stuff if you do, or perhaps their "Carry On Up The Charts" Best Of/B-Sides album.
