Album of the Week: The Cure – "Disintegration" (1989)

2010/01/31

Track 4: Lovesong:

The Cure's "Disintegration" is the all purpose album for those in the dumps. Regardless of your source of solace or depression, whether it be loss of love, self-esteem, hope, or worse, you will find a companion in "Disintegration". It is better to embrace the gloom to work through it and to put your focus on a movie or an album, than your own life sometimes. If not now, it will happen in the future. When it does, you can pull this one off the shelf and let The Cure heal your wounded soul as a sympathetic presence.

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Lovesong" being my favorite.

Track 1: Plainsong

Track 2: Pictures of You

Track 4: Lovesong

Track 6: Lullaby

Track 10: Disintegration

The Watson Twins – "Just Like Heaven" (2008)

2009/04/14

I am sure my pick this morning is entirely because of yesterday's bonus song, the original version by "The Cure".

An old friend of mine sent me this song last year because it reminded her of me. This cover has a sort of dream like quality, like an old memory of good times long past. Still, like the original, it is a song of great joy, but like the memory of it. It is similar yet very different from the original version. Usually I don't like covers but I think this one has merit, and The Watson Twins really make it their own.

PS: Obviously this song was featured on Private Practice, but I heard it last summer, so I'm going to count myself as ahead of the ball on this one.

The Cure – "Just Like Heaven" (1987)

2009/04/13

This bonus song was my song of the day on 3/12. (I'm still working on posting my songs from before I started this blog.) Although frequently thought of as dark, emotional, and perhaps depressing, it is The Cure's happy songs that I really like best. They are an emotionally loaded band for me because I have listened to them at times of great joy and great sorrow in my life. This song is one for great joy and hopefully makes you want to dance as much as it makes me.
