The Killers – "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" (2004)

2010/11/22

I had a busy weekend, so I am playing catch up.

I am going to use this opportunity to post the story of Jenny's murder from the point of view of her murderer. This fictitious tale gives their name, "The Killers", that nice double entendre too.

1. Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf off of the album/b-side collection Sawdust
2. Midnight Show off of their album Hot Fuss
3. Jenny Was a Friend of Mine also off of their album Hot Fuss

Here is part 3, Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, where the murderer is being questioned by the police, and recounting scenes from during the murder in a way to claim his innocence.

Also, this is the opening song on their first album. They've gone a bit "softer" since then, but it was a nice introduction to The Killers. I tell people, "start with Hot Fuss" if you haven't heard The Killers.

The Killers – "Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf" (2007)

Here is part 1, Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf, where Jenny breaks up with him, and he turns to the bourbon with a smile. It is unclear how together they truly were, but clearly he isn't going to let her go so easily.

The Killers – "Don't Shoot Me Santa" (2007)

2009/12/16

I know it isn't fair to the all non-Christmas celebrators that the airwaves should be so congested with Christmas songs this time of year, as if all other music is on hold until December 26th. Only 1/3 of the population of the planet is some form of Christianity so what are the believers of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Jainism, or one of the other major religions to do!? And what about the Atheists? Who is writing songs for them? Huh!?

My selection for today will hopefully tickle the fancy of all though. It is not your traditional Christmas carol at all. No… I think even those out there who hate Christmas may get a kick out of this one. It is too funny, especially with the video!

Album of the Week: The Killers – "Day & Age" (2008)

2009/06/04

Track 3: Spaceman:

Originally I had planned to post "Sam's Town" this week, but this album is too solid. When I first heard the album it seemed weaker than Sam's Town, but now I disagree with that. After repeated listens, I think The Killers have an awesome trifecta of albums with Hot Fuss, Sam's Town, and now Day & Age. (Oh but don't skip over their "b-sides/extras" album "Sawdust". Lots of good stuff on there too!)

I was tempted to not just post my favorite 5 songs below but to post the whole album, because after my very favorite song, "Spaceman", it gets very difficult to choose. Possibly seeing them twice in concert on their current tour, where they play most if not all of the songs on this album, has helped to endear them all to me. (Well… except maybe the last one "Goodnight, Travel Well". That might be my least favorite.)

Seriously though, of all of the music from 2008, this is the album to buy in my opinion. Each song is different, good lyrics, energetic in their own ways, and well sung & played. It is a Post-Punk Revival masterpiece.

In concert they are truly entertainers. Both shows had the theatres packed, the energy high, and even some effects and theatrics. Brandon Flowers in particular was totally pumped each time! I was also impressed with just how many songs they played. Given the opportunity, I would highly suggest seeing them in concert!

Here are my 5 favorites from the album, with "Spaceman" being my favorite.

Track 2: Human

Track 4: Joyride

Track 7: I Can't Stay

Anyone reading this blog for a while now, should have suspected an album by The Killers would be on the "must own" list!

The Killers – "When You Were Young" (2006)

2009/04/24

I saw The Killers in concert a few months ago, and they were awesome. I might not have gone if it wasn't the only thing G seemed to want to do. I bet G would see The Killers in concert every day if it was a possibility. G plus others (who will remain nameless… no no, not me, but you know who you are out there) have even fantasized about stalking Brandon Flowers down in Vegas. I'm pretty sure that given the opportunity, G would leave me for him. Me… I'd rather meet with Ronnie and go over how the hell he plays some of the beats he does.

But seriously though, The Killers is probably one of the best bands I've picked up this decade. I love most of the songs. Each album is distinct, and each is worthy of the "Album of the Week / Must Own Albums" list I have only just begun. In concert, they are probably one the best I have seen, if not THE best. Sure Brandon can come off as a little cocky or stupid (Exhibit A) and Mark, Dave and Ronnie barely speak, but they are all excellent musicians and artists in my book, and Flowers is truly an 'entertainer'.

This song off of Sam's Club is solid. I will surely be posting more of The Killers in the future, so I'll save my breath for now. Enjoy!

New Order – "Crystal" (2001)

2009/04/05

I went out for a run, listening to other stuff but this song of the day was not on my MP3 player. By the end of the run I felt running home so I could listen to this. So New Order's "Crystal" wins the "song of the day" prize. Until recently I had kind of forgotten about New Order. I listened incessantly in the early and mid 90s but then they kind of faded away for me. This song is awesome though and makes me think I have been missing out.

A bit of trivia… If you watch the video, note the bass drum says "The Killers". Apparently the 'fictitious' band in the video is where "The Killers" got their name. (Hey it is on Wikipedia, so it must be true!)
